Can anybody explain to me reasons why my blood glucose could be dropping when I've eaten good today. Hubby and I had pub carvery, no alcohol just coffee. At 9.30 pm I started to feel shaky and had wobbly legs i took a blood glucose test and it was 4.3 I went and ate a banana and ate some Christmas pudding with cream. I've just took another reading and eventually got a reading of. 3.6
I don't feel shaky and wobbly now but it's scared me some. Why would it drop like this if I've eaten well.
Thanks in advance Marie

Perhaps you did not eat carbs such as bread with your meal? Or you ate a small meal portion compared to your normal meal's portion which fit with your insulin dose. Did you do any sort of exercise such as a long walking before your meal? because exercise makes the cells more sensitive to insulin

4.3 isn't anything to worry about as non diabetics go round with that sort of figure all the time. If you have been running high figures then your body thinks you are going hypo when it isn't - this is known as 'false hypo'. I don't know why your figures dropped further from there.

In relation to what you ate, the food you ate was fairly slow acting carbs and the cream would have slowed them down even more. To have raised your blood sugar quickly then jelly babies or orange juice would have been preferable items.

Don't take any notice of the poster above me, you are a diet only Type 2, not on insulin. Is it correct that your last HbA1c was 4.4% as that is in the non-diabetic range?

Hi I'm type 2 and I'm not on any meds. Just diet. Today was stressful as my cat was poorly I had to go to the vets. Going out for me is very stressful. If stress can play a part in low blood glucose then that will be it. It's all new to me diabetes I'm still. Learning. I was just reading the site for info.
Thanks for responding.

Hi Denise thanks. When I went seeing the nurse last time to get my results I asked her what I was when first diagnosed all she said was that I ws 48 I had only just tipped over. I was told to diiet usual stuff for three months my next result she said 44 I ead most pleased as I had lowered it. This is why I'm confused with numbers because I'm seeing some peoples readings and they are quite high compared to mine. The highest reading I've had to date is 9.8 and my lowest was tonight 3.6 that's my testing.
I am going to ring the doctors tomorrow and get to find out propperly. Hubby coming in end will ask questions. I'm a wreck when I go out nerves get the better of me.
Thanks for responding Marie

Hi Marie

There are two types of measurements for HbA1c. Old timers like me use the % figures but doctors have started using a different set of units called IFCC and yours is in this. Your 44 is equivalent to 6.2% which is fairly good for a HbA1c.

The readings that you get on a meter are different units again and should be between 4 - 7 mmol before meals and no more than 8.5 two hours after meals if possible.

In a lot of people, stress makes their blood sugar higher, but it is not unknown for it to lower levels.

In my opinion, it would be a good idea to visit your GP, it may not be just the diabetes that is lowering your levels, but I'm not a doctor and can't diagnose anything.

I know stress usually makes levels go up but when I took my dog to the vets for her booster she got very distressed and ajatated as she doesn't travel in a car often or like the vets. When I got back I hypoed

Sounds like you might be eating low glycemic and don't realize it. Eating meat causes insulin production, but if no carbs. to fight, can actually lower your blood sugar. That's why I eat protein first thing every morning - low carb yogert - 4gm net carb for a 6 oz container plus it's made with whey protein that helps build muscle. If you don't eat any grains, your blood sugar will return to normal because grains are the highest glycemic food we eat on a regular basis. Glycemic index of white table sugar 50gm - 59 Wheat flour 50gm - 72 Only thing higher glycemic than grains is dried fruit. Whole fat dairy reduces risk of type 2 diabetes by 60%. With milk, the lower the fat the higher glycemic it is. Low fat is not a good idea for diabetes, plus fat raises your good (HDL) cholesterol.

Thanks to all of you I have learned quite a lot tonight I'm feeling much better now that I understand more about blood glucose levels.

What did you eat at the carvery. Things like roast spuds and Yorkshire puddings have a lot of carbs. You may have experienced reactive hypoglycaemia. When you push your glucose levels higher than what is normal for you, your insulin response can over compensate and push you lower than usual. I used to experience this quite a bit when I was pre diabetic and it could leave me feeling quite weak and shaky. On my last glucose tolerance test ( a deliberate ingestion of a large amount of glucose) I peaked at around 11 after about an hour, but 4 hours later had dropped to 3.6 which is about 1.5 lower than I would usually expect to be. Similar thing happened when I fell of the wagon and succumbed to a pizza and a couple of kripsy kreme doughnuts. Expected a horrendous 2 hour reading, but to my amazement it was 3.7.

Thanks for the info. I did have roast potatoes and yorkshires much to my disgust. I will have to take more care in what i eat. I will learn slowly but surely.
