Hi

I'm wondering if there are any people who are pregant and were type 2 before the pregancy.

I have had to swap metformin from insulin and am finding control of the post food readings to be really hard! Can any one offer advice?

Thanks

hi Diane i was type 2 before becoming pregnant with my now 5 month old... was on metformin and glicazide and diet control (but was never much good at checking my levels)... whilst i was pregnant they switched me to insulin i have 2 types. one long acting one and one short acting one, i was started on a combination one which kept giving me hypo's and then quick hypers after eating to counter act the insulin... the long term insulin (levemir) is the easiest one to use as u have 1 dose per day and adjusting the levels between meals is fairly simple!! the short term insulin u take 10 mins b4 eating, during the meal or up to 10 mins after eating...the measuring of your dose for this depends on what u will be eating. i found even with low carb diet (which is what is recommended) it was harder to control the readings than it was to control the long term dose. if u have say a pasta/potato main meal then u need to increase ur dose, ur gp/hospital can give u info on how to work out ur insulin to carb ratio!!! can be a tad confusing but i also found the further along in the pregnancy the more insulin i needed for each meal and long term dose had to increase too... i'd also suggest getting ur thyroid function tested as type 2 and thyroid problems go hand in hand... do feel free to drop me a line if u want any more info i am more than happy to share!!! good luck with the pregnancy xx

hi

thanks for that - I was getting the feeling that type 2's just didn't have babies - the nurse at the hospital counldn't give me any information on how often some one was in the same position.
I'm still early days (8 weeks-ish) and I can't believe how much the little so and so is screwing with my sugar levels - I seem to be upping the insulin dose every day and still not hitting the right post meal range - I occasionally hit it but go up to 12 a times which makes me feel like a complete failure! :? The only advice I got from the nurse was get used to it - this is how it goes - you constantly chase to catch up - is that right or does it settle down (a bit)?
I just ending up worrying I'm doing it all wrong and something horrible is going to happen to the baby - not a good place to be for sugar levels either!
How hard did you find it all?

Thanks
Di

Hi Diane

I was Type 2 before pregnancy (diet only) but im 9 weeks today and have been closing monitoring my blood sugars from week 3. currently im on 10 units twice a day of insultard and 4 metaformin
tablets. I have to move the units up every 2 days by 2 units until a consistant level is achieved.

less than 5 before breakfast is my goal - 4.7 would be perfect they said.

This is my second pregnancy so I know what I am letting myself in for. Are you being seen by your ANC every week?

you may find they plan your birth date quite early on. As I have pre-existing Type 2 and hypertension I have been given a plan already of week 35 to be induced with steriods (however
they did calculate this from my 1st pregnancy of week 35 spontanous birth weighing in at 7 1/2 pounds)

I am trying to not eat any carb laden meals in hope the insulin doesnt spiral out of control.

It would be nice to know how you are getting on as we are at the same point of the pregnancy?

Regards

SAM

Hi dianeb

Not sure if this will help BUT I was an undiagnosed diabetic throughout both of my pregnancies and only got diagnosed as what they thought was gestational diabetes at the end of my second pregnancy (although never given any treatment for it) ... what I would say though is you really have to get the meds right at this tme, keep at your midwife to help if ur DSN isn't giving you what I need ... not trying to scare monger but not receiving the correct meds when needed nearly ended me (and my youngest :x ) My youngest was born weighng 8lb 10oz, sounds good ... SHE WAS 13 WEEKS EARLY !!!!! lol Due to the diabetes she was HUGE!!!!!! This I know sounds like a good weight but its not healthy, just as being overweight is unhealthy for an adult in some respect.

As I say, not wanting to put doom and gloom on it butjust make sure that your meds are looked after xx

Hi
I lost the baby, not through diabetes, but some wierd chromosonal thing (Edward syndrome) - got by Hba1c tested and I had 5.9% for the first three months. Feeling good on that front, but now worried about the 'it happens' comments when I ask if the diabetes impacted on the miscarriage/gene problem even though it was under control. (The DN was the only one who was positive). I was taking the 5mg folic acid for at least the last 2 years - so at a loss.......
