Help - Type 1 and stopped taking insulin >>>

I was diagnosed with Type 1 inJanuary 2013, I was originally on Humilin, but moved to Basal bolus in October. My Insulin dose decreased from 8 units to 0, having stopped taking my long lasting insulin in December and stopped taking insulin altogether in january.

My issue is that my Blood glucose still rises to 15+ upon eating food, however drops quickly when moving around (no strenuous exercise), its so quick that I am unable to walk a short distance without my BG going to low.
I came to a point in january where I could no longer take insulin as i was needing to take at least 50+ gram of carb to allow me to walk a small distance to and from work,along with testing every five minutes, I was and still using unto 300 test strips months+ .

3 MONTHS ON AND I AM STILL STRUGGLING - NO INSULIN BUT MY BG STILL DROPS, TODAY TO 2.8 - HOW ???????

I seen the specialist 2 weeks ago who placed a sensor to record by blood glucose, to which the specialist advised not to take ANY insulin and booked me to spend 2 days in hospital to be assessed.

Has anyone else had this ??? I am under no illusion that I beat diabetes, as i still have crazy highs, however I got the worst of both worlds, crazy highs feeling poorly along with crazy lows all of this without taking any insulin

Please help
 
there is probably a list of things that could cause it and a bunch of tests to find out. when are you going to hospital?
 
I'm going in next week to be monitored, however unsure what they could do to stop my lows. It seems like my body cannot regulate Bg either high/low
 
Could it be honeymoon period?

Newly diagnosed diabetics get this because their pancreas is still producing a little bit of insulin and hasn't packed up all together, hence there being no need to inject.

Unfortunately this won't last forever.
I used to know someone that had this for two years after diagnosis.

Thank you for the reply, the specialist doesn't feel it's the honeymoon period, however I hope that it is and hope it stops ASAP as silly as it may sound as at present it's unmanageable, having hypos and hypers with no insulin :-(

I too had lows frequently with insulin & stopped. My doc told that I am in honeymoon phase. My BG is quite high after meals which goes down with physical activity but I dont have any lows now. Anyhow I am going to take rapid acting to combat the rise after meals

the first logical step I would take would be to test the basal dose or doses.......

what basal are you on?........

it does sound from your post that something else could be going on but its worth eliminating the most obvious things first......

Hi novorapidboi26, I have stopped taking insulin altogether since January.

I had another episode today, check bg before walking to get lunch which was 8.5, by the time I walked to the shop a short stroll it fell to 2.5 lucky I had glucose tablets on me as I was caught out as I usually need to carry a bag of supplies with me recently. It seems my body can no longer regulate bg and so although I may be producing a small amount of insulin, my body doesn't know when to stop.

Really sorry to hear that you're having such a dreadful time trying to manage your blood glucose levels. Managing BGs can be difficult at the best of times, but the unpredictability you are suffering must make it nigh on impossible.
Keep pushing the healthcare professionals/ your doc to make sure you get all the help you need, and a conclusive diagnosis.
Wishing you well, and sending you healing virtual vibes.

Not a helpful comment I know but that is so odd. It's almost like your pancreas is but playing catch up. It doesn't work at first when you eat, then you go high then it floods you with insulin and doesn't know when to stop.

If you aren't taking any medication (ie pills or insulin) it is still possible to have a condition that creates Hypoglycemia. It is also sometimes an indicator of pre-diabetes (as in type 2) but that sounds unlikely in your case. I would suggest you might also google Non-diabetic Hypoglycemia as there are a few causes of this. I would tend to agree with the others above regarding Honeymoon period as that maybe the real cause but if that is not the case then your in-patient BG monitoring will give them the information they need. Hope you find out soon so you can get it sorted.
 
Hi there, my daughter was diagnosed 6 weeks ago and like you has stopped all insulin. Every time she took fast acting insulin her sugars dropped to 2.1 within 45 mins. The levemir was dropped down and then removed as she was still having a hypo every afternoon. Been off it a couple of days now and her lowest reading is 4.0 strangely still in the afternoon, I think she would still go lower if she hadn't ate. I would love to know what causes it to happen when your not taking insulin I am quite worried about it all. Have you had any change since posting?? Will keep you posted I think we are gona see the same pattern as you when she goes back to school.
