Hi all. Im new on this site so please bear with me. Lol. I am recently diagnosed diabetic type 1 in November last year. I'm so new to diabetes and have recently found out im 9 weeks pregnant. I've the past few weeks in the evening time my sugars have been very high. Last night before bed it was 21.4. I'm showing slight keytones in my urine tho I also have a cold hanging over me too. Any advice would be great as in what to do next? I see my diabetic pregnancy team on Tuesday, do I hold off and see them or contact someone else in the mean time? I'm so worried I have already done damage to my unborn baby!

Do you usually take a correction dose for highs? Before you were pregnant, I mean. What insulin regime are you on?

Are you taking high dose folic acid? Ladies with type 1 trying to conceive or in early pregnancy are advised to do so. This is higher dose than the ones that can be bought over the counter.

Are you familiar with correction doses? Are you familiar with sick day rules?

What are you doing when you see blood sugars at 20+ and ketones? Realistically without quick corrective insulin you are at risk of DKA, which can be fatal, and comes on quicker and stronger in pregnant ladies.

If you aren't confident giving corrective doses, with those kind of readings (20+ and ketones) you should get yourself to A&E.

The targets for type 1 ladies in pregnancy are very tight:
  • Fasting under 5.3
  • 1hr after eating under 7.8
  • 2hr after eating under 6.4
The targets are tighter because high blood sugars risk miscarriage and foetal abnormality. So again, if you don't understand how to manage your insulin to meet those targets you should be getting advice on that ASAP.

Hi, pregnancy has an effect on insulin needs. You should see your team asap. It’s good that you’ve been referred to a specialist antenatal unit that will monitor you closely and guide you through the changes, especially as you’re so recently diagnosed and probably still learning how to manage T1.
Have you corrected the high that was present when you posted? Did you go to A@E? Have you gained help?
If the few highs were the first then it’s very unlikely your baby’s been damaged. The thing to avoid is prolonged high bs during pregnancy as this can increase the baby’s rate of growth and the likelihood that it will be born with oedema. Good care, with the help of a specialist, should ensure this doesn’t happen and these days the prognosis for women with T1 having healthy babies is good!
Your own health matters too! If your blood sugars are still high and you still have ketones then seek help now. It’s probably making you feel physically bad too so commiserations!
And congratulations on your pregnancy.

Thank you for your replies ladies. Im so new to all of this so no I haven't a clue what correction doses are or what to do when my numbers get to high. This pregnancy wasmt planned ao i only got started on folic acid at 7 weeks along with vitamin d. I saw my diabetic consultant on Tuesday and she has changed my insulin regime. I used to be in lantus but now i am on levimere (8 in the morning and 8 at night) and novorapid (4 in the morning, 3 at lunch and 4 and dinner time) but to up it one unit each meal if my numbers are over 10. My hba1c was up this week so that was a bit dis heartning. I have my 12 week scan in 2 weeks time so i will be working really hard on my numbers and just hope and pray that baby is okay.

Hi there.
Just wondering how you are getting on? I’m around 5 weeks pregnant and am seeing the odd sugar at 20 which is scary! How did your scan go? X

Congratulations! A unexpected double whammy!!
1) Important to keep BSLS under control as I am sure your specialist emphasised.
2) There are multivitamin and mineral tablets for pregnancy and breast feeding. I have seen strong recommendations for pregnant women to take multi-vitamin and mineral tablets that contain not only folate but IODINE which baby needs throughout the pregnancy. So please consider starting a reputable brand asap too! ( iodine, iron, vit D, folate, vit b3) and of course check with nurses and specilaists
3) I have heard urine infections are more likely during pregnancy and so could upset blood sugars.
4) I have read that in some places the routine tests for pregnancy include thyroid blood test as thyroid problems and diabetes problems may be interlinked, but not always.
5) Consider writing down questions as they come to you and ask on forum and ask your specialists, diabetes and obstetrics.
6) Take good care of yourself and that will help baby too.
