Help with basal testing please

Had a go at basal testing last night using 'Think Like a Pancreas' Chicken and veg dinner at 7, 22 carbs 4 units. 10pm test 6, 2.30am test 6.8, 6.40am 4.6, drank coffee, 9.20am 5.7.
It looks like the current basal of 14U Detemir night and morning doesn't need to change but the BS aren't steady, shouldn't they be? The last few mornings there has been a rise of up to 3mmol in the 2-3 hours after waking. If it's the bloody coffee will have a terrible time convincing my husband to drink green tea LOL

Hi @ChrisM28 - the rise as you wake is more likely to be due to Dawn Phenomenon - which is the body releasing glucose to get you ready for the day.

On your basal testing, the usual recommendation is to not see fluctuation of more than 1.7mmol from start to finish. Your numbers are just about within that range, but don't expect a stable, flat number all night. It's very unlikely.

Try and get him to eat something on waking to see if that puts a stop to the 3mmol/l rise (obviously he'll need to bolus), many of us find if we don't eat on a morning our bg levels can rise quite sharply with an hour or two, by eating it shuts off the liver dump so worth a try anyway to see if it helps.

As for green tea, its an acquired taste and you either like it or you don't, there's a really good quality tea that Holland & Barrett sell and is by far the best, its called Double Dragon and cost around £2 for a box of 20, although Lidl sell a decent green tea too that costs around half the price and the brand name is Knightsbridge.
