Help with changing doses please

Thanks Jen and Sophia

I asked why i should not count the carbs in veg as i thought all carbs should be counted and i was told that due to the high fibre they are digested so quickly that they don't have an effect.
My daughter never has as much as half a plate of veg but i might work out how many carbs are in how much she does have to see if that amount would make much difference to how much insulin she would have.
I will be cooking spaghetti bolognese at some point this week and i usually use 2 tins of chopped tomatoes for the sauce and she will eat a third of that which must be a fair amount of carbs yet i was still told to disregard them :?

Hhhmmm that is a good idea Jen about delaying the insulin for a more fatty type meal instead of splitting the dose. I might try that, so if she started eating at 5pm, finished at 5:30pm, i would tell her to inject at 6pm??? That might be easier than injecting at 5:30pm and 6:30pm.

After another weekend at her dads she is yet again high this morning, despite a correction with breakfast i am betting she will still be high at lunchtime as she was mid morning.
It really annoys me how much just 2 days there sets me back in sorting her levels out as it seems to take 2-3 days for her to come back to testing what she was before she went :(

Tomatoes are very low in carb, I think it's 3g per 100g so they should make little difference. But you need to watch processed tomatoes like tinned ones or tomato sauce etc. as sugar is often added to counter the acidity.

Jen, I've only ever taken the values off the package, they give both dry and cooked carb value. But as you say everyone cooks for different lengths so that could be making the difference. I do cook the pasta for a few minutes longer than recommended on the packaging so that's probably where the problem has been.

Just remembered i forgot to reply about pasta
The packets have carbs for uncooked and cooked weight.
I weigh before it is cooked and then work out the carbs, purely because i find that easier and then the dinner doesn't go cold!

Jacket potatoes are the only thing causing me a problem with working out the carbs as every book and website quotes a different amount, i went with an average of 21.5g per 100g cooked but she goes low after and no high spike later so next time i am going to try 17g per 100g and see what happens!

Well she has surprisingly come back down by lunch now :)

If it helps, my book says potatoes are 15gm carb/100gm. Even sweet potato is the same.

Khaleb has signs of coming down with another cold. I can't wait for winter to be over and the hot weather and swimming in summer.

The delayed insulin really only works if their bsl before the meal is in that 4-7 range. If it is higher you might want to not wait too long.

I send sympathy for your shared parenting arrangement. I think I would need to be medicated if I had to communicate with Khaleb's father. Khaleb's father did take me to Court but it was just a big bluff as he is a bully. Haven't had anything to do with him in the last 3 years. One thing you see the more parents you meet who have kids with T1 is that some people 'get it' far more than others.

Hope you have a good week regardless of the weekend.

Thanks Jen, think i will have to experiment with jacket potatoes until i find an amount that works for her but i might go with the 15g you use and see what happens next time!

Oh no i really hope he hasn't got another cold :(

I only speak to him now if i absolutely have to
He dropped her back 15mins late Sunday night, now if they had got stuck in traffic i would have been ok but she says she was late because they finished dinner late so left later - can not believe he could not even text to say this??? He knew i'd be annoyed cos he just dropped her off in he road and drove off before she'd even knocked on the door!!!

He is type 1 himself so he should 'get it'
The first time she went with this new routine and treatment plan, i spent an hour writing out her new routine, all her ratios, even how much to give for every 10g increment for each meal.
But he just ignored the lot

Khaleb has yet another cold but other than the odd correction dose it hasn't done anything worse than provide copious amount of nasal discharge. Snot heaven! Khaleb hasn't learnt to blow his nose so I end up wiping it so much that it is all red and sore.

Had a bit of a win tonight even with the tail end of the cold. Khaleb ate a white bread roll with ham and cheese and even though I had a guess of the carbs (did weigh and use general bread for carbs/100gm) his post meal was 6.7mmol :D . This might sound strange but Khaleb has never eaten a bread roll before - mainly because he hasn't been able to bite or chew food very well. I have been wondering what I would do for packed meals for him and this is going to be a good solution. I actually did have a meat and veg meal for dinner but Khaleb really wanted to get into the bread rolls on the bench so I made him one.

So sad that all you have done getting settled with MDI goes ignored. It is especially bad that the ex is T1 himself. Even just thinking about Khaleb with the bread roll I know how difficult it could have been without the facts and figures obtained by monitoring and carb counting. Now to go check him before I go to bed and hopefully get another night of sleep. I've been getting many more sleep nights this year than any before. Goodnight!

Just a general comment really that you guys should be praised... you do such an excellent job for your children.. you really should be mega proud.

Reference potatoes I use 17.5g / 100g
