We are new to this, my son is still in the very early stages of being diagnosed they are not sure if he is brewing type 1 or if it is a rarer genetic type, his last two tests have been 6.5 (hbac1 i think its called)
he is now doing his bs levels daily and they are as high as 20 and as low as 3 it is all totally confusing us and we do not want him to go onto medication unless he really needs to, I should say he is 18 so not really my decision but this is his opinion to, being 18 it is difficult as any mum with a 18 yre old will know not quite old enought to take all this on board himself so i need to know about it to i.e diet and key tones etc, but as he is 18 he has to make the decisions himself, I go along with him to the appts but what we really want to know at the moment is about carbs, we did not realise until today (about 3 months after first realising he is diabetic) that carbs affect blood sugar to (sorry to be naive) what we really want is some sort of education on the food side of it all to try to control it with diet before having to go on any medication, can any body help/advise where to go or how to go about getting the advice we need.
Thanks

Hey mumofsande,
If you hang around there will be numerous clever and informative people to help out. In the meantime here is a link to the advice that is given to new visitors to the forum. Hope it helps :D

Hi!

On the Greetings and Introductions section of the Board Index is a thread called Advice for the Newly Diagnosed. You'll find some basic info on diet on there which should help. Sorry I can't give you the link directly  but someone no doubt will. (Yes - Jaykay this time!)

There's lots of good information on here, and very helpful people, so have a good look around and ask lots of questions. Once your son is properly diagnosed things will begin to look better.

Welcome both!

Viv :)
