help with menu plan new to this

rude d/n nurses and being treated like im wierd because im diabetic
hello again. im new here and had some fantastic advice last night , so I was wondering if I could ask for guidance, this is my menu today I ask if anyone can help me to see if its correct while I await gp appointment to confim diabetes
breakfast
I egg scrambled
3 tablespoons beans
orange

lunch
2 slices burgun bread
light spread/2 slices of Bernard matt ham
banana

tea
diced chicken breast mushrooms various seeds in 2 tablespoons phily low fat
vrious veg

supper
apple munch on sunflower seeds /pumpkin seeds

am I on right lines here ??
 
That depends! Did you test before you ate and 2 hours after?
Personally beans are a no no - lots of sugar. The banana a definite no. Nor the orange. Low fat philly, not for me, give me the full fat.
I have scrambled eggs too, but with bacon. And I also have Burgen occasionally but with butter, for fruits its berries all the way.
But for you, you need to test to see if your diet has an effect on your blood sugars.
 
thanku for your reply , I havnt been confirm diabetic as yet still waiting on gp appointment so I don't have a test or anything just wanted to see if I was on the rough track to help myself really, is it just berries of all kinds that will be best, I have a lot of weight to start shedding so optted for low fat stuff,, back to drawing board for me then lol thanku
 
Hi cath, low fat stuff tends to have more sugar in it. Berries as in strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, I have them in full fat Greek yogurt, or in sugar free jelly.
Google 'blood sugar 101' for good advice on reducing carbs.
 
Hi cath in general terms your on the right track. No processed carbs there. When you have been to the doc and you are testing yourself you will test before you eat and two hours after to see how things change. That way u will get to know what foods affect your blood sugar more. I cant eat beans i now know, at least until i get my levels lower. In the mean time until u see the doc, cutting white processed carbs is a good start.

With fruit those with low glycemic index are best as they are slower turning into blood sugar. I have an ap on my i phone GI diet helper which is really useful in helping with fruit and veg choices and general info

Hi. In general you are doing the right things. Yes, watch for sugar in any beans and keep the bananas small and infrequent. Ref weight loss the secret is low-carb not low-fat. It's worth remembering that 'fat doesn't make you fat' it's those carbs which the food industry keeps very quiet about.
 
thankyou so much once again , im learning now slowly I was bit stumped at the full fat stuff because I never knew it contained so much suger lol who knew long road ahead tweeking this but it seems I be eating more than I did before, strange but thankyou again have gp app tomm hopefully if I can get in , need to sort out this and the persistant headache witch I assume is connected thanks again xx :thumbup:
 
Get hold of the book 'Carbs and Cals' - it has pictures of real life meals and food, and gives figures for carb, fibre, fat as well as calories.

It was really useful and some of the figures surprised me

Hi, I use the carbs and cals book having completed the DAFNE course after struggling with BG control and more to the point using the CORRECT insulins. I have changed hospitals and have a new diabetes team. They put me on a DAFNE course and things have gone GREEEEAT!!! The team changed my insulins and my results and HEALTH is vastly improved. Three months ago I was at a very low state of health and had 2 month off work due to extreme fatigue...high BGs for a long time and poor sleeping.

My point now, as type 1 with Christmas around the corner, is eat in moderation. We all know that carbs has a massive effect on our BGs so eat with this in mind. Use the correct amount of insulin for the carbs you eat. Please don't worry about no beans no bananas no bread...All these NOs can drive you bonkers.It all depends on HOW you manage your diabetes.and what your diabetes team teach you. After 3 years MY previous DSN told me that she had NO idea why my BGs control was all over the place and advised to get myself referred to another hospital's diabetes team. At that time I was on novorapid and lantus and extreme tiredness but that's another story.

We are all told so many different stories what to eat etc, but as type 1 you can eat what you like...but use common sense please and use the correct amount of insulin food what you eat. I have nil carb meals sometimes also when I want to check my basal insulin amounts. If you are confused ask to go on a DAFNE run course. You will learn much more that what the dietician can tell you. Sorry for going on but have a good Christmas to everyone.
 
Looks ok to me I am type 2 on metformin :)

I would ditch the beans and banana as they cause me to spike, but until you are diagnosed and start to self test you will not be aware of what causes you levels to rise :(

We are all different and tolerate things in differing amounts :)

Good luck with it any question someone on here will always be able to guide you at least that's what have found :clap:

Sounds good and everything I eat but without the bananas. Will you be testing before and after the meals ?

one of the best diets to follow for blood sugar control and weight loss is Atkins. Ignore anyone who tells you it'sdangerous. that's rubbish. Once you get used to it, it's not hard to stick to.
