hi can someone please help me im currently taking 500mg of metformin twice a day and have been ok apart from the last few days where I am feeling sick for a few hours after taking it and my stomach is swollen and I look like im around 5 months pregnant which im not I have also started going to the toilet twice a day if not more. my problem being is im due to increase a further 500mg next week but I cant cope feeling like this im also tired all the time and can sleep for england

if you are still tired your BG could be still high? see your Dr, ask for a meter, tell him about met symptoms and ask for the slow release

I have a meter and my highest sugars have been 10 recently im seeing my diabetic nurse next week for a routine appointment so will mention to her. can you take multi vits and iron tablets as im on the go from 6.30am till 10pm

The Glucophage are slow release metformin & can be kinder on the tummy. But if you are very tired, that's symptomatic of diabetes so you need to tell your nurse this.

Are you getting the high readings 1st thing in the morning?

I've always taken supplements, but ask your GP as we are all different!

no the higher readings are in the evening im just learning all this as only diagnosed in jan this year my morning levels are 6.7

How soon after your evening meal are you getting that reading, because you need to consider all those things as factors & be armed with the info when you go into the gp/nurse.

My first symptom was being very very tired, I was coming home from school & going straight to bed, that combined with exteme thirst - luckily my Mum used to be a teacher and spotted the 2 tell tale symptoms and got me to the doctor very early.

around 2 hrs I take reading just before I go to bed. I was up until a few weeks ago hitting 24 25 so it has come right down but then I had a chest infection and on antibiotics and steroids my hba1c in jan was 83 march down to 57

Infection can make your sugars go up, of course.
Bring proper notes into clinic with you, it wouldn't be fair to give you advice on here and not know your medical history or what else is going on - but 2 hours after meal may not be enough time for you to level off again - I know some meals (fatty or carby or for me bready) seem to take a lot longer for my blood sugar to level off. See what the clinic says when you go into them.
Try not to worry, becasue the nature of the beast is - worrying makes your sugars do weird things too!!

im not worried about my sugar levels im concerned more by the fact that im feeling so sick and tired most of the day and my stomach looks like im pregnant

Thats why you have to go to see the doctor/DSN. As soon as you can.

Hi teddybear74, I am a Type1 and have been for 33 years. I was prescribed Metformin 2 months ago to aid weight loss. I am taking 500mg twice a day like you but when I took 3 tablets a day I had the problems you mentioned. Metformin does cause looser stool and going more often. Everyone is different, one dose does not suit all. You need to discuss these symptoms with your doctor, you may have reached your ideal dose already.

Hi all, im not new but still very ignorent about diabetes. I am on metformin 3 x daily, sometimes i miss it, but there is one thing i have noticed from reading your messages, is that of running to the toilet. Every time I stand up or go to do something i get a terrible urge to go to the toilet. Im dancing, crossing my legs etc and can hardly make it to toilet - Im only 51 female. Is this the metformin or have I got a bladder problem? When I get to the toilet only a small wee comes out. What is this?
