Hi,

I'm really struggling at the moment and would appreciate any advice/similar stories from anyone in a similar position. I was diagnosed with MODY diabetes 5 years ago following an incorrect diagnosis of gestational, Type 1, then Type 2 diabetes following pregnancy. I chose to continue with insulin as it worked well for me from the start. I went on to have another child after this and this is when all my problems started. My Hba1c's were in the 30s when I was pregnant, 40s when not and my most recent had gone up to 50 so I know there is definite room for improvement. (Can't keep blaming the 2 and 5 year old!) Anyway, I was recently told by a cardiologist I was displaying symptoms of autonomic dysfunction after not feeling quite right after having my son almost 2.5 years ago. He recognised I had an exaggerated response to standing. I have also suffered with bouts of nausea, headaches, leg and arm weakness, pins and needles, overactive bladder, adrenaline surges - probably more! All these symptoms went away, sometimes one would flare up then go and they would take it in turns. Now this week I have experienced a burning pain in my feet which lasted 24 hours and random stabbing/sunburnt pain all over my body which comes and goes. Also twitches and vibrations in my legs. Does this all sound like neuropathy and is it possible for this to develop in 5 years?! I didn't think my hba1cs were THAT bad although I could test more. I've had a brain MRI which was fine so it's not neurological and a nerve conduction test in my arms last year for suspected carpal tunnel which started with a sudden onset which randomly went and nerves came back fine. I'm so worried about it and fed up of feeling like this.

Hi @HOLLIE4 and welcome to the forums.

We can't diagnose on the forums so it's hard to answer your question without breaking the rules, though I agree that most people have diabetes for years before getting neuropathy symptoms, and it does sound like you've been well controlled (way better than me anyway). Unfortunately the data on MODY diabetics (do you know which type you have?) is still fairly sparse so that's another reason why it's hard to comment.

But your symptoms sound concerning and I would certainly see a doctor about them, whether they are or aren't neuropathy.

Lots of virtual hugs, I hope you get this sorted soon.
