Type 2 Help with test results

Hi. First week of July I had hbA1c test and got results a couple of weeks ago. The result was 49. This was done a few days after coming from a 4 night stay in Ireland with a group of 20 friends cycling 170 miles for a charity. During that time I drank a lot in the evenings and my food intake wasn't great - full Irish breakfasts every day, fish and chips etc.

Today I had another blood test done and I will get the results in a few days, to compare to the 49.

I also received a blood meter today. I just did a test and got a reading of 5.9 after I've just come back from my mum and dad's after 4 glasses of wine. Also bacon and eggs for breakfast, couple of lattes during the day and ham and picalilli on brown bread for lunch.

Can anybody help me shed any light on this 5.9 reading in conjunction with my food and drink intake today and in conjunction with the initial hbA1c reading of 49?

I haven't had dinner yet - home made chilli con carne.

Thanks

Nick

The wine could well be your answer. Alcohol is weird, and if it was a red wine or a dry white there are no carbs involved (or very few). It has the effect of lowering blood glucose.

Also, how long ago had you eaten when you did that test? Was that the ham sandwich? A reading taken at a random time means very little. You need a before eating reading and another 2 hours after first bite.

The HbA1c is a sort of average of your blood sugars over the previous 2 to 3 months. What you did in the week before will have had very little effect on that average. It may have had some, but very little. (sounds like you had a good time, though!) The cycling could also have helped burn off some of that glucose.

All you can do is wait for the results of your latest test and keep testing out your meals (also, a food diary will help)

Thanks. Wine was Pinot Grigio. Sandwich was around 2pm. Also had a slice of ham in mums about an hour before reading.

Forget that random reading. (ham has no carbs so won't have had any effect). Start afresh. Test before and 2 hours after first bite, record these levels in a food diary and look for patterns. Then if you wish, come back here and we will help you understand what your readings mean in relation to the food you ate/exercise you did.
