I have been T1 for 38yrs now and until 6mth ago have maintained excellent control with thankfully no complications - as said until 6mths ago which coincidentally was when I started with 'hot flashes' and menstrual issues. My BS levels started to increase as did the level of Novorapid taken. I reported to several GP's the unexplained loss of control and suggested reason as the 'Perimenopause'? This was basically thrown aside as not known to cause any real issues with diabetes and they didn't refer me back to consultant as requested (and have done many times since) Now 6mths on - I was diagnosed with Polymyalgia Rheumatica 3wks ago due to increase blood inflammation levels and shoulder pain. I have however suffered neck and shoulder pain for many years but it had gone worse recently. My GP said he would refer to Rheumatology and Diabetes consultants as he prescribed high doses of Prednisolone Steroids - yes - which would upset BS levels further, but he assured me as the inflamation in muscles decreased, so would the pain and insulin I was taking - which by this time had tripled at each of my 5 daily doses to previous to just be able to eat minimal carbs!
I've tried the steroids for 3 weeks now with no dramatic effect to pain relief or blood sugars. I'm now trying to gradually reduce dose to come the steroids which will take 8 weeks and Hey Ho! He's finally agreed to refer me to the Diabetes consultant!
I'm sure if they'd listened to me in the first place telling them that I've only seen change since the menstrual changes started happening and I may just need a shoulder xray to see what's happening regarding joint and muscle pain - it may have saved 6 months of delay in hugely increased BS and insulin levels none of which can have helped.
I just hope when I finally get to the 'experts' who are meant to understand diabetes that they mat be prepared to listen to the possibility of Menopause being the issue.
Has anyone else out there experienced major blood sugar issues with the menopause?
Research definately need on this subject and education for GP's!
