Help!

I cannot advise about insulin as a T2, but when I was on gliclazide tablets and I got totally mixed up with my doses in a day, I kept monitoring my BG's and I also had a choc bar at the ready. Fortunately I got through that evening and night OK, but I was prepared for some serious lows if they came.

Is detemir your long lasting one? If so, you should be fine. Your sugars might be a little erratic tomorrow but hopefully it will calm down fairly quickly. Take some Lucozade or somethin to bed with you just in case and monitor your levels closely tomorrow.

You call a doc.

You can expect to have recurrent hypo's for about a day, so you will want to confirm with them what to do next.

They might want you to spend the night, or have someone wake you up every couple hours.

You definately want to take it seriously, as it is long acting, you might find the problem occurs anytime in the next 24 ish hours.

I'd get in touch with NHS Direct or what are they called in the UK?

Or go to a&e and get an opinion.

Until then, I'd run my sugars a bit higher so there's something to take from. Gives you some margin.

Good luck.

PS on that one - triple the amount of basal is not good. I am on 16 units Levemir a day currently - I will have hypo's if I increase that to 17, so triple is bad in my honest opinion.

Thanks everyone, currently eating everything in sight. Going to set alarm for every few hours through the night and take some food to bed with me. I'll give my diabetic nurse a ring in the morning before I take any more insulin. Waiting for someone from NHS Direct to get back to me.

Mileana - I'm very much the same as you. I have a half unit pen for my levemir so very scared.

Tracey, you say you normaly take 5 units in the evening and 18 in the morning. If this is the case, you will probably get a few hypos but it shouldn't cause too much harm. I take all my levemir in one go. A few months back I accidentally injected twice. I had a few lows the next day but I was fine :)

Is there anyone online at the moment who can give me some help. I've taken my morning dose of detemir tonight, so I've taken 18 units rather than 5. What do I do?

Hi

Although Levemir is a more gentle type of basal insulin, the amount that you have injected tonight will probably cause you to go a bit hypo..... probably anytime from 2am onwards.. so play safe and eat some carb before you go to bed and then set your alarm clock to wake you up about 1.45am, do a bg test to see if you are low, or ok and then do another test about 3.30am and see what your levels are then. You may need to eat some carb then but if you are ok, then you should be ok till you get up in the morning.

No real need for a doctor, just keep testing as above and eat some carb as needed to level out Levemir's action.
