I am new to joining this site but have been reading it for a while so hope you don't mind me asking for some help. I was told I had pre-diabetes March 2011 as my fasting was 7.0mm then I was retested and it came back at 6.3mm. I was retested this year in August and it was 5.9mm so I was told back to normal but I still don't feel right, I bought a glucose testing meter and my fasting in the morning so far has been good varying between 5.2 and 5.9 but when I test myself two hours after food it is the high 9's.For example last night I had home made soup, broccoli,chick peas, lentils, spinach, carrot ,green beans and just blended them and ate a bowl, two hours later I am 9.6 on my meter. I suppose I am asking why am I getting conflicing information fasting seems to say okay but after food doesn't. I rang the diabetic nurse at my doctors who I could just see on the other end of the phone rolling her eyes and she just kept repeating you are not a diabetic! Any info would be gratefully received.

Hi. From what you say about your 2 hour after-meal readings, I suspect that you are diabetic? The best tests for this are the GTT test and the Hba1c. The GTT (Glucose Tolerance Test) is the 'official' test that should be done to help diagnose and the Hba1c is then done after, perhaps, 3 months to get an overview of your average levels. If you haven't had a GTT then I would insist on one. I would ignore the morning fasting test and continue to measure 2 hours after a meal to gather some typical readings you can discuss with the surgery. You are obvioulsy hitting the same level of NHS amateur approach that many of us have found and you may need to insist on a GTT if all your tests have been fasting ones.
 
You are completely right to ask for a glucose tolerance test if you want to set your mind at rest, but you'd have to be hitting 11 or more after your meals for them to call you actually diabetic.

It's just a label though. If you are feeling unwell because of the slightly raised sugars, then they should help you with info and advice so you feel well again.

The chick peas, lentils and carrots in your soup can all raise blood sugar levels - so that is something to think about. Chick peas, lentils and carrots all have carbohydrate, so it depends how much soup you ate.

I made this mistake with lentils once. Confidently consumed a large bowl of lentil soup (homemade) 2 hours later, blood sugar in double figures!!

It may be that you are what they call pre-diabetic.IF you are, it would be wise to start thinking about what you are eating now - and that can sometimes bring up shocking results about foods that may not be the best for your blood sugars.

Ask for another test to confirm. And then take action.
