hi, my BS levels have been very high but I have been controling BS levels for the past couple of days. Tonight 2 hrs after dinner BS was 9 -- much lower than usual for me ( usally 15-20...when I wasn't controlling my diet ).

They are usually much higher than this and I take 32 units of Levemir insulin every night

Am I likely to suffer a hypo if I take my regular amount of insulin tonight?

( doc prescribed this dosage 3-4 weeks ago during my last regular visit )

thanks

Hi nannoo,

It's impossible for us to say for certain.

If in doubt, you might want to lower your night time dose and inject the balance the next morning. Many of us find better 24 hour coverage by splitting the basal dose, so this might be a good opportunity to try it out?

Thanks Fergus. Well, I didn't have a hypo!!! I had a small amount of ice cream before going to bed just in case. Can hypos during the night/in your sleep be dangerous?

I am now waiting to hear from my doc as to whether I need to reduce my insulin. I have to say, eating low carb (except for testing) this week has brought my BS levels WAY down.

I'm glad you're OK nannoo! Yes, nighttime hypos can be extremely dangerous.

If your diet is shifting towards lower carbs, you will need less insulin, pure and simple. It's great to hear that your blood sugars are getting better but don't wait for your doctor to tell you to lower your dose if you're eating fewer starchy carbs. Keep testing and learning....

All the best,

fergus

Thanks Fergus. Is it not dangerous to play around with insulin? My doctor was very specific about how much I should take (32 units at night, 20 in the morning).
