Helping A Family Member With Diabetes

Hi All, hope you don’t mind, I don’t have diabetes but my sister, who I’m very close to, has had type 1 diabetes for 26 years and is currently 33 years old. She struggling to keep her sugar levels within limit and having seen some negative stories in the paper I can see it’s getting her down. Her insulin is Novorapid and levemir. She also uses one of those arm sensors to make blood testing easier. She tries so hard and her HbA1c is constantly high. She has been told her levels are too irtactic for a pump also. Ultimately, she would like to start trying for a family of her own but is obviously worried if she doesn’t get her levels under control this will never happen for her or worse she gets complications from her levels running high. Anyway, really I’m after any advice or ideas that family members and friends did to help support you and any ideas at all that you know of or even of other people who have tried to stabilise levels.

Thank you all so much.

Hello and welcome @SisterDiabetic :)

Could you ask your sister to join here for support ?

Without knowing details such as HbA1c and what her daily routine is like then it's hard to give advice on what improvements she could make, and also knowing what her interpretation of high is. Using a libre sensor does help greatly as long as the person using it is acting on it, I use one and it has helped me improve my HbA1c but only because I can see when I am going high/low and can take action.

I think we all live with the fear of complications, it's the unknown aspect of having type 1, and the media can increase that fear too, but talking to others and engaging with support regularly can give reassurance.

Hello juicyj,

Thanks for taking the time to answer.

Yes, good point and she does have an account on here. Her HbA1c was 69. I know her daily routine changes due to her job- but I’ll see if she’ll find posting on here again useful. I’m sure it would be.

Do you find anything your friends, family or colleagues did / do that you’ve found helpful or useful in relation to supporting you with your Diabetes?

Thanks again and all the best,

:-)

why not advise her to purchase Dr Bernsteins book, and also Think like a pancreas.
