Heys guys. My Name is Bar and I have type 1 diabetes. I got told I had it about 8 years ago...I think I developed it after consuming a diet consisting of high fat and sugar from eating processed foods like bars of chocolate, chipper food and drinking up to 22 Liters of coke and diet coke a week for close to ten years. I'm only 28 now and my pancreas is producing a little bit of insulin but I was recently told this would stop at some stage. In the eight years I've had it I never looked after it, hardly ever took my meds or checked my BS readings. Last week I was admitted to the hospital with and they told me I was DKA with a ketone reading of 3.2 and a BS reading of 41.3mmoI/L (738 mg/dl)The doctors told me I should be dead and were amazed I was able to last so long.
I got a bit of a fright if I'm honest and have since started to take my insulin 4 times a day and change my diet completely. When I got out of the hospital on wednesday my readings were still pretty high...breakfast was around 13-18mmol/L, Lunch time was around 13-15mmol/L and dinner about 8-9mmol/L and before bed usually 15-16mmol/L. That was on Wednesday, Thursday and on Friday I started to eat coconut oil right after I injected my insulin and was drinking green tea all day, about four cups. Ever since then my levels have dropped significantly right across the day and remained around 8-9.7mmol/L. today I hit 4.9mmol/L before dinner and had a hypo...horrible feeling, and had nothing on hand to drink for it so, I had to opt for a cup of tea with 3 sugars and suck on a few sour lemon sweets I decided to keep in case of such an event. Anyways now I'm looking after myself and watching what I eat and how much and taking my meds, I'm on Insulin Novorapid pens and a Lantus pen for the 24hrs. I came here to hopefully get some info about diabetes and talk with others who have it. Well thats all from me.
