Hgv license class 1

Hi all I am new to this site but I thought I would share my recent experience I have been a type 1 diabetic for 2 years now and lost my class I hgv license because of the insulin the law was changed in October 2011 allowing diabetics to re apply to have there license reinstated
I was straight in on the said date well my wife was she sent for the paperwork to dvla booked appointments with doctors and specialists then sent all the paper work back this was in October 2011 after a number of letters saying that forms had been superseded and we needed to re send we finally got a letter saying we need to book a appointment with the diabetic specialist to complete a form together we went that same day and sat there until he saw us as the dvla was paying him he did see us quite quickly we then posted the letters back and waited another 2 weeks but still nothing so I decided to ring the dvla every day which i was told all paperwork was back but needed to be scanned on to the system again I phoned every day then bingo I rang 25/4/2012 and was told my license had been reinstated and I could have my class 1 license back which is a blessing as I have just started my own haulage and skip company which I can now drive myself my advice I can give is check your blood twice daily for a min of 3 months get a good wife to fill out the forms and follow what the doctors say and finally keep ringing the dvla as often as you can happy trucking j kay
 
I didn't think they would issue a class 1 licence to a insulin dependant diabetic, but just the same it's great news for you and hope the business is a success.

Check out the dvla web site if you pass the higher medical standards you get back what you lost

In order to keep it I would suggest you check your bg levels a lot more regularly that twice a day though, are you aware that the DVLA require all insulin dependant diabetics to test ever time they get behind the wheel of a vehicle regardless of the length of journey and every two hours on longer trips.

I have just renewed my HGV for the first time, I have been put on a 3 year renewal, so that sort of made me sit up and look at myself.
The DVLA have stipulated that testing should be carried out "Twice a day and at times when relevant to driving", ambiguous, yup, but at least there is some sort of direction there.

I am absolutely made up that you have been re-instated though JK, as it gives others like me who have struggled with control, hope, if the worst comes to the worst..

Good luck in your venture, I hope it goes from strength to strength, as the saying goes... "Without Trucks, you get nothing..."

Just to depress you I have just got my C & D categories put back on my licence to drive my horsebox, Ford Cargo 813 so 7.5t non hgv, and they have only issued me with a 1 year licence. My understanding was becuase of the lorry categories the licence is routinely restricted to 1 year.

Testing needs to be evidenced for 3 months and tested before you drive as the other have said.

I don't have an HGV but have a normal vehicle licence and from what info I gained is that as any diabetic receiving hypo causing drugs (insulin or tablets) then we need to.....

1. ensure that we test blood sugar before we drive and it must be 5.5 or above
2. test after 2 hours of driving on a long journey
3. if we feel hypo at any point, stop turn off the engine, remove the keys and move over to the passenger seat (this part I may have hassles with as I really aint that good when hypo )
4. rest frequently and test again before driving before leaving on a long journey
5. ensure that I have a meter and hypo kit available in the car
6. Must must have evidence that I have tested.

All in all it is a PITA but it is a safety issue and we must do it.

I have therefore requested an extra meter from the same company as my InsulinX meter and they obliged by sending me a smaller meter so I can keep it in the car glove box along side a hypo kit that I'm sure I bought from the shop on this site.
 
Just to clarify the position regarding what you need to tell DVLA, they issued a new guideline leaflet in November 2012 titled "Information for drivers with diabetes treated by non-insulin medication, diet, or both". In summary, if you are on tablets instead of insulin then you don't need to inform DVLA unless you have had more then one hypo in the last year or you or your medical team feel you are at risk of hypos.

A bit confused,doctors are thinking about insulin as a next step,been driving LGV1 for 24years.do you loose your licence automatically when you go on insulin,or can I carry in driving?i check my bloods every couple of hours now,have don for the last 6 months.
Or do I loose it until I have three months worth of records on insulin ? Any help would be much appreciate.worrying times! Thanks Paul
 
You can still drive LGV on insulin if your doc says it's ok whilst the DVLA arrange a medical for you. That's what I was told. Unless you gave been told to stop, your license is good. It is a bit if a pain with all the paperwork and medicals though. Took me 10months to sort out ! I have my LGV license back now but only lasts 12 months then the medicals start again.

As soon as you notify DVLA that you have started on insulin (and you must do straight away) you will be told to stop driving LGV's until you have completed 3 months and your Consultant is happy with your control and fills in the medical form.
If you give them a call they will explain everything to you and send out the relevant paperwork. I found them very helpful.

I told DVLA straight away and got the paper trail started. I asked if I could continue to drive LGV and they said as long as your doctor said ok. They cannot revoke your license until they have carried out their enquiries. That's what they told me anyway. Best to check with them anyway.

I think you can only continue to drive pending medical enquiries on the annual renewal not at the time of initial issue after going on insulin. It has nothing to do with your doctor, they only advise on car driving status.

Thanks Angie. It appears I was misinformed ! I have recently got my full license back fortunately after a bit of a nightmare with DVLA to be honest. Ended up having to travel 100 miles to see one of their "specialists". Only lasts for 12 months too. To be honest, I did stop driving LGV but that is honestly what they told me ! Scary eh ! Always best to check.

I think I was lucky despite having to wait 5 months before getting in to see my Consultant (not a DVLA one) she filled in the form for DVLA and the one for my taxi badge for the local council and handed them back to me to post. I put them straight in the postbox at the hospital on the way out and I got a letter back from DVLA about 2 weeks later saying I could drive again. Our local Council for my taxi badge was even quicker, got that back within about a week!
Both only last 1 year and that was January, so soon be time to do it all again :thumbdown:
