Hi ... a little advice please?

I'm Jo, 33 years old and right now a bit panicky

I've suspected I have type 2 for a while now, but due to not being able to go to the doctors (long story and involves anxiety issues) I have resorted to buying myself a glucose monitor today.

Have just done the first reading I'm a little worried. My reading was 16.8, which I got twice, and then tested my hubby as well to make sure (his was 5.6 I think).

Just about to have lunch so will tast again after.

Should I be immediately worried with that reading?

Hi Jo and Welcome.

16.8 is above the normal range for Blood Glucose (around 4-7mmol/L is my understanding) so while you should feel free to stay around here, read and ask questions PLEASE also seek professional medical advice :)

Yes. At the very least I'd call the Dr. for a home visit if getting out of the house is a problem for you.

Fingers crossed for ya.

Don't want to sound alarmist, but I'd have thought that was almost a cert for diabetes. Doctors now. Once it's confirmed, IF it is, don't worry so much. At least then you can just deal with it.

OK :( Thought as much!

Just a quick question, how long after each lunch should I wait to re test? All the booklets that camewith it are overwhelming ...

Yes. You need to get to the Doctors as soon as possible.

You can't tell for certain from a single reading, but 16 mmol/l is much higher than it should be. I self tested before seeing the Doctor and got a 24.4 mmol/l, by which stage I was feeling quite ill.

It really isn't very frightening, he'll probably send you for some blood tests and then send you away for a week until they're processed. If you are a T2, you'll probably just be given some tablets and told to look at your diet.

Let us know how you get on.

borofergie is right. I wouldn't bother about doing any more tests now for a while, get a proper diagnosis first (which will take a different type of measurement from the one you get on your meter) and then you can start testing constructively to see which foods suit you and which don't. We can all help you with that, but doctor first!

OK, I have just phoned to register with another doctor as the one I am currently registered with will not come out and see me (again long story :() plus he is also on 2 weeks holiday ... as is the practice manager conveniently since I want to put a complaint in as well.

Gosh this is all such a mess! I really shouldn't have waited this long :(

I have PCOS and should be taking Metformin anyway, but haven't for years because I get terrible runs with it. I'm also disabled so can't move about much ... hence why having the runs is a big no no ...

But good news is the new doctors have a locum lady doctor atm, and my hubby is on his way now to register with them, and hopefully the lady doctor will come out and see my after surgery tonight!

Good. You may be able to get a different med to metformin if it doesn't suit you. Some of us manage our diabetes on diet alone, so that may be another alternative.

That is great news!

As above: Metformin is not the only option although some find that the extended release version or taking it at different times of the day can help.. and for others the Gastro-Intestinal symptoms subside after a while.

Please stay around here, read and ask questions.

Thank you all for your advice :) The doctors have called me back to say they might not be able to fit me in tonight after all ... however ...

It occurred to me a little while ago after re reading the booklet for the glucose monitor that I hadn't washed my hands before doing the initial test, so I have tested again after washing them thoroughly and drying them. I ate at about 1pm ... My reading is now 22.9 Should I ring my doctors back (I hate being a pain) and tell them of this new reading?

Ring them back. Be a pain.

What did you eat for lunch?

Until you get to see the Doctor (and probably afterwards), I'd be very careful about eating carbohydrates. Try and avoid bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, sugar, non-diet fizzy drinks. Drink lots of water and see if your BG down a little.

Ahh right, I had a sandwich and bag of crisps for lunch. Might that be it?

I have a pounding headache now and blurred vision. But It feels like a migraine coming on. If I take my usually Nurofen plus & Paracetamol mix for it, will it have an effect on any testing the doctor might do? Only if I leave it too long I'll start throwing up :S

Food or other contamination on your fingers could give a a false high BG reading but you have now washed them. Food especially starchy or sweet foods will tend to raise your BG except that for someone who does not have Diabetes it is unlikely to go to 22.9

If it continues to go up seek medical advice. If in doubt seek medical advice.

Phew thank goodness for that *swallows pills, hopefully just in time!*

I drink lots of Barley Water (no added sugar one), is that OK to drink?

I really should go and find another part of the forums to ask all this stuff right?

Yes. Carbohydrates like bread (in the sandwich) and potatoes (in the crisps) turn straight into sugar (glucose) in your blood. You can do without that right now. If you need to eat anything, try something with lots of protein or fat (meat, cheese, eggs).

Don't drink the Barley Water either, unless it is very diluted. You'd be better off with water or diet-soda, or tea or coffee.

No! You're fine here. Get to the doctors first, we can save the yelling about posting in the wrong part of the forum till later.

(Actually, this is the right bit, I think).

Hi JoJoF,

I would not panic, but you do need to see your GP to get some advice. Those levels are definitely too high and you need to get someone to help you with them.

Barley water is slightly high in carbs / sugars - other no added sugar squashes are lower and better for you (but nothing is better than water).
