Hi. I have had Type 2 for nearly 20 years and although my Bg readings have been good and also my HBa1C has been good at 4.3 I am failing to lose weight and the doctor wants me to try the weight-reducing tablets but I have heard about the side effects and am reluctant to go on them. Anyone tried these tablets as I would like to hear your views on them.

Hi Ruthie.
Welcome to the forum. Have a good look around and if you have any questions, there is usually somebody with an answer. Mind you, with an HbA1c of 4.3.......I think we should be asking YOU the questions ? That is not 'good', it is EXCELLENT ! Possibly one of the lowest around for a while.
Well done you. Perhaps in another thread you could tell us how you achieve such great numbers ?

As for the weight loss tablets, never been on them. Did all my near 5 stone weight loss by diet and with a little help from some normal diabetic meds, that and just plain old self determination and willpower.

I think we have a few members who have used various pills for weight loss, hopefully one or two will pop up and advise you better.

Hi Ruthie
That is a fantastic Hba1c. How do you do it?

hya ruthie and welcome,
that hba1c is brilliant, well done,
sorry i cant help with your question tho :)

The main two weight loss tablets in the UK are sibutramine also called Reductil and orlistat also known as Alli.

Sibutramine suppresses your appetite. You can't take it if your blood pressure is over 145 systolic or goes over this. You can get palpitations too and you won't get it if you have known ischaemic heart disease or are on SSRIs which are a class of anti depressant. In my experience it works well but the effect wears off after several months.

Orlistat works by preventing the uptake of fat by the intestine. In effect, you excrete the fat. This is okay as long as you don't eat much fat in your diet. If you over indulge you can have terrible wind, pain and faecal incontinence. You need to take a vitamin supplement with it.

Although Sibutramine seems more effective than Orlistat in giving weight loss I have not found the effects of orlistat to wear off like sibutramine does.
