Hi

I'm Mark newly diagnosed type 2. Went to see the DN at our practise on 30th October she told me my starving blood test (about 2 weeks before) showed hba1c at 11.2% . She took more blood that day to do a kidney function test etc and they also did another hba1c. She called today to tell me the tests were fine and that my hba1c was 8.1% I'd only had a cup of tea that morning. She at frst seemed quite pleased that her treatment was working until I reminded her that I wasn;t on any medication between the two tests and hadn't chagned my diet at all. She seeemed a bit flummoxed by this news but glossed over and carried on.

Has anyone else had a big change in hba1c in such a short time? Is it normal?

Thanks in advance

Mark

None of it makes any sense to me. You don't need to fast for an Hba1c, the result usually comes in a different form and there is not a lot of point in doing two Hba1c tests just two weeks apart since it gives a result for your blood sugars for up to three months prior to the test. The fact that the numbers dropped from 11.2 to 8.1 makes as much sense as the rest of it.

Hi

She seeemed a bit flummoxed by this news but glossed over and carried on.

That's the only bit that makes sense.

If you had two HbA1c tests (which would be unusual in such a short space of time) then one is clearly incorrect, and requires investigation, or the only other explanation is that one of the tests was not a HbA1c test, and the result was not a % but in mmol.

If they specified 'fasting' then it may have been a normal blood test, which gives a snapshot of your blood glucose in that moment. It will likely be different every day.

The HbA1c is a completely different test, and gives an averabe glood glucose reading over the last few weeks.

The only way to know for sure is to request print outs of the tests. This is a good idea anyway, because it means you get the full test results and can read up on what they mean. just ask as reception, or the nurse. most surgeries print out the resutls quite happily.

HI all
Thanks for your replies.. need to pop down to the surgery later to get a new prescription so will ask for print out and see what she meant. Watch this space!
