Hi all. My son was diagnosed with type 1 diabtetes 11 months ago, he was 15 at the time and now 16. After being on insulin for a few months, his levels came down down very quickly and by april he was told to stop all insulin as even 1 or 2 units was causing hypos. He has been off insulin since. His hbac1 has been below 6 the last 2 times and he has had 2 c peptide tests which have showed defo type 1 ! Just wondered if it was normal to be on honeymoon for so long and i thought that stopping insulin would shorten the honeymoon but it hasnt, he is still 7 months with no insulin and a few months before that with very little at all. I cant seem to get my head round the fact that he is type 1 because he eats what he wants and only tests twice a week and yet his levels are of non D person! if anyone else has had it similar to him then would love to know that it is normal. Thank you x

Hi there. My son didn't have a honeymoon at all but it is fairly common for people to have extended honeymoons. Sometimes just giving the pancreas a rest kick starts it to keep going. I even read about a person in the military that managed 12 months of honeymoon (no insulin) so he could continue to serve (diabetes is not accepted in the military). Hope he stays as is for as long as possible.

thank you Jenny, we feel in sort of limbo, I still dont quite believe he has it coz of lack of insulin. I do hope it stays as long as possible, just want to know there are others that has experienced and that it isnt weird!! x

It's very unusual but I have heard of it happening, particularly in certain ethnic groups (can't off the top of my head remember which ones but can look it up if you are interested). Apparently some people honeymoon for years at a time - very rare.

thats interesting, as my son is mixed race! wonder if that is anything to do with it or whether he just having good honeymoon. Thank you
