Oops already posted a few threads before finding this introduce yourself one.
Diagnosed as pre-diabetic about 18 months ago (from a GTT after a 'funny turn' that doc was concerned was heart related but no evidence of any heart damage) but didn't really take it seriously. Fasting BG was 6.1 then. Advice offered was from the nurse who just said try to eat high GI foods rather than low GI foods and come back in a year. Had a really stressful year after that with renovating a house and gave it very little thought.
15 months later thought I'd better do another GTT and got a letter afterwards asking me to come in and see doc who 'offered' me metformin ("to give your pancreas a break") and statins ("because as a diabetic you have a 10% risk of heart or stroke 'events"). Fasting BG 6.4, GTT indicated pre-diabetes, insulin resistance etc. Doc didn't seem keen on diet and exercise as a way to avoid or control it.
Being offered medication made me realise it was serious and I'd need to do something to avoid developing Type 2 in near future. Refused medications (nothing will make me take statins after all I've read - especially that they are implicated in making people Type 2 diabetic!) and then had several days of "Food panic' with not a clue what to eat or not to eat. So much conflicting advice out there until I found this forum. So good to be able to read how actual diabetics are helping themselves and great to be able to ask questions that doctors often don't seem to be able or willing to answer.
Bought a meter and now on a LCHF diet (although somewhat haphazard as still getting the hang of it) and have lost 4.5 Kg and reduced my fasting BG to under 6 on recant mornings and minimising spiking (by eating fewer carbs and taking 15 min walks immediately after food). Goal is to lose another 5Kg and increase muscle mass with weight training.
There do seem to be quite a few websites still advocating relatively high carb diets for diabetics but closer inspection shows many of these have a fairly aggressive vegan agenda.
Anyway just wanted to say thanks to everyone who posts here and answers questions and shares advice and helpful info so freely.
