Hi everyone,

My name is Rita and I was diagnosed today with Type 2 - my bg was 12.5. My doctor was lovely and despite being an hour and 20 minutes behind with his surgery still gave me 30 minutes of his time to explain everything and answer all my questions and allay my fears - so I left the surgery feeling more positive than when I walked in! He has given me Metformin 500mg once per day and Simvastatin 40mg. He agrees with self-testing and the individual taking control of their life - he did not lecture me once! I love him!!!

I found this forum earlier in the week when I was trying to find out more information and I think I will be coming back time and time again as there is a lot of support and help out there - for which I, for one, am very grateful.

As I'm new to this it will take me some time to get my head around the terminology etc - (what are spikes, for instance?) so please be patient with me if I ask really dumb questions.

I have a weight problem and need to lose approx 4st - so will be looking at the low-carb ideas - I have spent the last 3 years trying to lose weight by trying the low-fat way and it obviously isn't working for me - so want to try out something new.

I'm a fairly positive person and I know I will have good and bad days sometimes but I will not become a victim of this condition and I hope with all your help I will remain positive and in control.

Rgds,

Rita

Hi Rita
and welcome to the forum and the confusing world of diabetes. To answer you first question a spike is where your blood sugars go up fairly high then drop back down. A spike is usually found by testing one hour after eating then two hours to see if it has dropped down.
Low carbing will help you lose weight. Please have a good read in the low carb forum for some ideas.
Please ask us lots of questions, we will try our best to help you.

Thanks Sue - I understand a spike now and as I said I will be using this forum a lot over the next few months so all help gratefuuly received.

Rita

Sue - I think losing 3 st is great - you have done well. Keep at it - the weight will shift and you should be pleased with what you have lost so far.

I can never seem to get past 1 stone and then I manage to put it all on again but this time I am more determined than ever - I think being diagnosed today has given me the kick up the backside I need. I bought a new cookbook today called 'The big book of low-carb recipes' - they all look good and most are quickly prepared and each recipe is carbohydrate rated which helps because you don't have to work it out for yourself! Although I eat fairly healthily (or so I thought) I am a fairly lazy cook and like things that don't take ages to prepare and this cookbook doesn't look too bad.

I'll let you know what they taste like. Thanks for the support.

Thanks I really appreciate your support. I just wish I had tried low-carb before and maybe I wouldn't be overweight. Anyway I have nothing to lose except pounds and hopefully this will help me control my bg levels. i have a lot to learn.

Bye R

Thanks Trinkwasser - my doc is lovely and quite cute! However I was cursing him this morning because I took the statin he gave me (Simvastatin) last night and I woke up this morning suffering with Vertigo and a few stomach problems - obviously this one doesn't agree with me. I can cope with the stomach problems but not the vertigo. Anyway, its a good excuse to go visit him again!!!!

Thanks for the site info - i will have a good look at them when I feel a little less whoosey.

Hi Reetpetite!

Welcome to the forum! :D

My name is Sue also but perhaps to differentiate, would be easier to refer by my username of 'Salsasue', it's great that you have such a positive attitude and good outlook plus a fantastic doctor too! Was diagnosed beginning of this month with T2 and recently joined this forum; a great, friendly and supportive place you can be well assured! :D :D

Also have some weight to lose; it's a lot of information to take on board when you first visit the doc/diabetic clinic, like, 'Whoa'! I've noticed from the booklet they gave in the pack there's lots of things to be able to have food-wise. Yet have discovered and tried so far a few new things I've never tried before; a few of those being rye bread, blueberries and wild rocket (not altogether though! ).

Best wishes and all the best, Salsasue

Hi Reetpetite
with a positive attitude and a helpful GP and us! :D , you will learn quickly and do well.

Thanks Salsasue and thanks Hanadr - I am so grateful for yours and this forum's support. I know I have heaps to learn but as I am determined to control this condition I am at the moment lapping up all the information on this site - who better to get help and advice from than those people who have the condition and are willing to share their knowledge and experiences. As I said earlier my doctor was great but there is nothing like talking to fellow 'sufferers' so to speak.

Once I start testing I am sure I will have loads more questions for you all. What I am beginning to understand is that 'one size doesn't fit all' and what suits one person may not suit another - so I will have to find out for myself what suits me best. Oh I do love a challenge!!!

I've tried Rye bread this weekend and must admit I quite like it - never thought to try it before so now am looking forward to trying lots of other new things. Onwards and upwards (not my bg levels of course)!

Be a bit wary of ryebread - it is VERY dense! I freaked at the spike it gave me until I realised one slice was 70g - about 40g carbs. But I can handle half a slice with butter from lunchtime onwards.

Hi Trinkwasser,

Thanks for the advice re Rye bread - I did look at the carbs and realised it was fairly hi-carb so I have only been having half a slice every other day. I haven't received my testing kit yet so can't tell what it's doing to my bg levels yet - should be getting machine next week. Is there any bread it might be possible to have do you know - or is it a complete no-no?

You won't know until you get that meter!

Personally I can do oatcakes in small quantities even at breakfast, half a slice of rye bread by afternoon and even a slice of wholewheat bread in the evening, with a meal (generally I avoid wheat because it spikes me badly, even wheat bran)

Some people use ryvita or Wasa crackers or similar, others can get away with Burgen soy and linseed, then there's Fergus Bread which you'll have to ask him about (mail order). A cousin who has glucose problems but not diabetes (yet) can handle rice cakes but I can't. It entirely depends what part of your system is broken and in what way.

Good afternoon. My name is Rob and have been a type 2 diabetic for just over 2 years. I currently take 2 Metformin along with 2 Glicozide tablets each day. Can anyone please tell me if it is ok to take extra if you have missed a dose for any reason.

Hi Rob and welcome.

The answer to your question is a resounding no !! You just wait until the next dose is due and take as normal. Do not adjust dosages without first discussing with your GP.

Ken.
