Hi everybody!
A bit of a long shot here!
I have been to see my dentist and he has diagnoised me with something called gingavitias, excuse the spelling, I had it as a teenager i thought it had gone!
Okay excuse the explaination here, this relates to when i brush my teeth my gums bleed badfly, hence why i am in alot of pain!
My question is this, He has said that because my gums bleed so badly when brushing, it would be worthwhile removing my teeth and leaving the healthy 4.
Okay I am thinking why leave the 4, he said he would make dentures, he aslso said that diabetics have problems with infection etc! And said to save the pain of infection if he removed the teeth then there would be no more pain!
I was wondering if this would be a good idea or not? he has given me a appointment for a months time so i can think about it!

hya sandy,
its youre choice but i used to get horrific toothache as my roots were extremeley long and due to dodgy sinuses i decided to have them out, the dentist wanted to take them all at once under general but i am petrified of being put under so instead i had a few cut out at a time which wasnt pleasant, ive had full dentures for a few yrs now and im so glad the pains gone and the dentures look great too,
have a good think about it before you decide hun :D

Hi Totsy
The pain is awful full time! the dentist says it is extreme but after they are gone there will be no more pain from them!
I am unsure, i just want the pain to end! It is embrassing when you clean your teeth that you have to stay in the bathroom for up to ten minutes for the bleeding to stop! I use a baby toothbrush as they are softer but they are not made for adult teeth! God help me when i use tooth paste!
I have told haley about it! She held me in her arms, and said your mum had the same it runs in the family she had her teeth removed aged 33 as she could no longer cope with the pain!
As Xrs says the pain is getting much worse now, When i eat or drink anything hot or cold i jump out of my skin! Very messy affair..Lol

soaps on telly and people talking about the characters as if they were real.
It should be possible to cure gingivitis. .I had a spot on one gum that bled and after intensive cleaning over a week or so ( using listerine) it cleared. I know that's pretty minor and not like your situation, but when you consier the trouble that healing would take after multiple extractions, I'd give it a try.

Hi Hanadr
Been doing that for years now! this is why the dentist says that it is not getting any better! He has my old notes from my dentist whne i was growing up! He says that my front teeth are so very bad he could not save them not without extensive work!
I asked what i should do! I have tried all the ways, the warm salty water, oraldene, listerene! I am talking the scary bit is my gums pour with blood! The brush is bright red!
the dentist has given me lots of gauze so that i can put around my gums to help stem the bleeding! I have been thinking of other things i can do!

I'd agree with hanadr. It is possible to cure gingevitis, and then maintainence is important.

I think the final decision must be about what condition your teeth are actually in. If there is a lot of decay and this goes in to the roots it may be the best option is to go for extractions. Also gingevitis is related to receeding gums and there may simply not be enough support to maintain the teeth (even the good ones) in good condition.

You might want to talk to your dentist about the oral hygiene side of it as there are prescription mouthwashes and the like. I know very little about dentistry, but I do know that the can do amazing things. Have you asked for a referral for a second opinion? Having your teeth removed is a very major step.

Take some time to think about it, Sandy. Not an easy decision.

Hi Spiral and Hanadr
This is the 3rd dentist that i have seen and sadly to say they all say the same!
Thing is when i close my mouth! MY top teeth overlap my bottom teeth! My teeth are in bad shape even though i have seen dentists regular every 6 months for regular check up's!
I hate the thought of it! But as the dentists have said They can save a few but in the future top 5 years they would be removed! As they are decaying! i asked my fiancee what i should do!
He said well don't panic if you ahve to have them out i will stand by you! It won't change you! Except you won't be able to bite anymore! Lol
but honestly I have had this problem the whole time it is getting worse! when i was 15 they wanted to remove over half of my teeth! I managed to be able to find a new dentist who said that in the future it could get worse and removal would happen!
i am just so scared! It is scary brushing your teeth and seeing blood! I have had this constant since i was 10 years old, It never goes away! Normally in people it goes away where i am concerned it stays and never goes!

My dentist told me last year that I have gum disease. I was devastated as I have always looked after my teeth. He explained to me that some people are simply unlucky in that no matter what they do they will develop gum disease. In my case its probably hereditary. Somewhere down the line I may lose healthy teeth because of the damage to my gums. According to my dentist, gum disease its not reversible but it can be managed, a bit like diabetes can. I now have a rigorous scale and polish 6 monthly with the hygienist at my dental practice and as well as brushing my teeth in the correct way every day, I floss and use interdental sticks. I find the whole process very intrusive and stressful but its worth it to keep my teeth. Since starting this regime last year I have not had any problem with bleeding gums. At the last visit, my dentist measured the gaps in my gums again and he said that there had been an improvement since the last visit, which just goes to show that following his advice has had a positive effect. He also told me that the specialist mouth washes are no better for treating gum disease than any other mouth wash and that good oral hygiene is the best measure to prevent it getting worse.
The only advice I can give you is that if your gums are so badly diseased, you should have your teeth out. IMO the pain and discomfort it causes is simply not worth it if there is no hope of improvement. Good luck.x

Hi Sandy,
What trouble you are having with everything, my thoughts are with you, but stay positive as I am sure you will.

With regards to your tooth problem, as some have already said, think seriously before having them all removed as it would be such a major step and how long would the healing of the gums take in a diabetic?

I used to have a **** dentist but fortunately a few years ago I changed to another dentist who is absolutely brilliant. I suffered with gingivitis once and it was treated and cleared up. Now though as others have said, I think that mouth maintenance is paramount to keeping teeth. I used to suffer dreadfully painful and sore gums that used to bleed really badly everytime | brushed them. New dentist said to ditch the manual brush and get an electric toothbrush and brush the gums and teeth twice a day - after about 10 days my gums stopped bleeding altogether, I couldn't believe it. I now rigorously use electric toothbrush and little brushes in between my teeth and see the dental hygienist every three months and this has made a massive difference. Have you seen a dental hygienist?

Hi Ang
Yes i saw one last week, she freaked out She started to clean my teeth and she said my gums were not just bleeding they were pouring with blood!
I ended up having to have some vitamin k! As on warfarin too much bleeding and won't stop! They just panicked at the amount! She asked is this the norm?
i told her yes but sometimes more! i use a electric toothbrush and i use sensitive toothpaste! The hygenist said this was abnormal! The amount of blood, my problem is that i have had it for so many years now! Unless the blood is coming out of mouth i am not worried!
Worst thing is being stopped by a police officer when i used to drive about 5 years ago! And i was asked why there was blood coming out of my mouth! I found it quite funny at the time, i had to write down that i had used some dental floss and cut my gum between my front two teeth! And had cut into my gum! silly police officer fainted when i opened my mouth and he saw the blood! I had to dial 999 to get help as he had bumped his head! Poor soul i fely for him!
Just been for a shower and brushed my teeth afterwards, Just had to get fiancee to put wadding on my gums as they were pouring yet again! He says that the gum line around my front two teeth is starting to get higher away from the teeth now!
The dentist has told him what to watch out for with me! It is silly when after brushing teeth you have to sit with wadding on your gums! But i hate to think what i would look like with out it!
Maybe i could try out for halloween as dracula, I have plenty of blood and mine would be real dripping from my teeth!Lol.. Oh that is so sad!
But i am thinking of the pro's and con's of it all! I am scared that losing my teeth is a big step! But having blood pouring from my mouth everytime i brush is not good either!
Being on warfarin is not good when you know that if you can't stop the bleeding you have a problem! When i had my wisdon tooth out two weeks ago it stopped bleeding within 5 minutes but when my gums bleed from brushing can take up to 30 minutes to stop!

Hiya

Have you tried using a product called Oralclens? Its a natural anibiotic toothpaste and mouthwash - I buy it for my son from the hygienist that saved his teeth from gum disease this year ( hes only 16 but it runs in our family and has resulted in most the men in our family loosing all their teeth by their 20's) its a littel more expensive than regualr toothpaste but its bloody fantastic - I've even got my 13 year old on it now - prevention is better than cure!?

Hi totsy,
My Gp i explained what the dentist said and she phoned him to ask the reason why he said tooth removal!
He said that in his thoughts, i keep coming dowm with abcess and that diabetics come down with infections more! In his way he agrees with the other two dentists the same things!
That the tooth are going to cause so much more pain over the years! A dentists job is to ease pain in their patients! And this is the only way he can see of ending the pain!
He said that the bleeding is so bad and has nevre got better that he can't see it ever getting better!
I asked her thoughts, she said in some ways she understands what the dentist means! As she says I have had this constant from a young age, goes for a week and then comes back and the blood loss is so severe!
She said my choice at the end of the day! She said that if i do have them removed then she would like me to have a 5 day course of anti botics in the house in case a infection starts! She said that she will back me no matter where i go with this!
I asked how would i go about dentures as that is the bit that worries me!
My gp has run more blood tests while i was there today! She said that she wants to check my liver and full blood count! Just to be on the safe side!
I am unsure where to go with this! I just want the pain to end as it is stupid! the amount of pain i suffer is real bad!

Have u tried soaking some cotton wool in some corsydol daily use and wiping it round your gums instead of using a toothbrush.
Because I have very high sugars the enamel on my teeth is being eaten away and because of this even a baby's toothbrush is too abrasive. My dentist suggested using trying the cotton wool and it works.
