I am a Turkish Mechanical Engineer 56 years old. I live in Istanbul-Turkey. I work at an Industrial Group dealing with Energy, Steel, Industrial&Medical Gases and Banking. Currently, I direct a new investment of 800 MW combined cycle power plant. I have two sons - one is a Dietitian working at Governmental Public Health Service, and the other will just start Sociology Department at Bosphorous University, where I have gratuated Mechanical Eng'g B.S. and M.S..

I have diabetes Type 2 since 2006. But my diabetic history may extent before that since I have been diagnosed when I had tingling and dizzy fingers at my left arm&hand. I remember that my fasting blood sugar test result as 160. It was very unlucky for me that my friend was a Ass. Professor at Neurology department. I say unlucky, because now I realize that he mislead me and I had ulnar nerve displacement operation which did not give any progress. I still have nump fingers.

After 4 years, on 2010, I had dizzy, tingling and numbness at my right shoulder+arm+hand+fingers this time. I visited hospital and they applied EMG test at neurology. Doctor told that I had nerve trap at my right shoulder, my right elbow and slight trap at my right wrist. I asked what to do and got the reply : "Protect your arm !!!"

I was lucky this time. My sister-in-law had similar problem and the doctor had prescribed Neurontine. She could not use both her arms and 3 month continuous Neurontine use healed her ! Also, she told me to go to Physical Therapy Department at Hospital. So I did it, and all the symptoms at my right arm göne away !!!

These days, I have pretty high blood sugar level. HbA1C was 8.4 1 months ago. I was using Glukofen 1000 mg twice Daily and Amaril 2 mg again twice Daily. Doctor prescribed Amaril 3 mg twice Daily and added Betanorm 30 mg once Daily.

I also use Lustral 50 mg (and 100 mg since last year) since 2001. I have depression.

I am suspicious that Lustral increases blood sugar. I was prescribed Cipralex 10 mg once Daily and Sulpiride 50 mg once Daily.

I have started taking them since 3 days. But yesterday I stopped taking Sulpiride. After I take Sulpiride my blood sugar level rockets !

I am seeking depression treatment in diabetic people. According to my searches, SSRI pills like Lustral, Cipralex, Prozac, etc all of them contribute to high blood sugar.

The prescriptions at these antidepressants advise that blood sugar levels must be watched carefully. Yes, but what is next ???

I read that CBT Cognitive Behavioural Treatment terapies help.

I want to discuss with diabetic friends WHO suffer from depression, too.

Regards.

Hello and welcome.
There is lots of help here and people will be getting in touch with you. Read through the posts and you will learn a lot.
Your only medication I know is Cipralex,They dont tend to perscribe it in the UK because its expensive. Its sister is Citralapram which is perscribed instead.they take a few weeks to get into your system and tends to make you feel a bit worse when you start to take them, but 10mg is a very small dose. All you can do is test and see how it goes, everyone is different on what they can take or not take.
Do you know why you are depressed?

Hi Akif, welcome to the Forum. I take 20mg of citalopram, which is an SSRI drug for depression/anxiety, I mentioned to my doctor that this drug can raise blood glucose levels shortly after I was diagnosed in February this year, but he assured me that the raise in bg would be minimal. So far I have not had a problem. Just test and see how it goes.

Good luck

Marilyn

Thanks Patricia. I know why I am depressed. I work at a company since 17 years and it is owned by a single person. I am one of the few people who work directly with him. As years pass, his mobbing, tricks, opression has increased. I am also depressed at home because I like my two sons but they are so egocentric, lazy, depressive and unrespectful. My wife is like a slave to them and though I have anger bursts frequently, most of the time I have to keep my patience.
So, patience at work, patience at home has upset my inner balance. Now I cannot stand any adverse behaviour. I am so aggressive, I cannot recognize myself.
Now, I am at a "do loop". Diabetes trigger depression and antidepressant trigger diabetes. I am trying to find a solution like Alexander's sword cutting Gordion's knot.

Thanks again.

Thanks Marilyn. I hope it does not increase my BG too.

Hi Marilyn, I think Citalopram is better than Cipralex in terms of BG control. Thank you so much for your post since I suddenly remembered that doctors have prescribed Cipram which is same as Citalopram to my 90 years old mother who is T2 on insülin injection treatment. I'll investigate.

Hello again Cyron.
Diabetes can cause depression but its not part of the condition ,diabetes is just somthing else to upset us apart from other problems we have in our lives,I expect medication helps to bring stress levels down, but you should think about CBT and it helps to talk to someone.
I guess your sons may be teenagers that take a lot of understanding and I think its normal to be angry at times.
Can you talk to the person at work you have known for 17 years? if not and he is stressing you out think about looking for another job.
All the best.P
