Having to cut back on roast potatoes!
I've just joined this forum, and, sad as it is, I'm on here on Christmas night, now the family have gone home!
I was diagnosed with D2 in august this year. I had been feeling very tired in the afternoons, for at least a year or so. I also had pain in my lower legs. My doctor said it was because I was over weight. At that point I had come down from 19 stone to 16 stone. Quite a large weight loss I thought, though no change in diet or exercise. Indication of diabetes? I didn't even think of it - even though my Dad, who died at 63 in 1983 had it. His complication was heart related..
In December last year, my dear wife of 40 years marriage, was diagnosed with breast cancer - her operation was in January - and the following 3-4 months, I cared for her and we got through a very stressful time. She is now a great help to other sufferers on the McMillan cancer website. Anyway, we sold our family home and moved to a small property near the coast in May this year. Continuing tiredness I put down to the moving, very stressful - I was also on anti depressive medication, and high blood pressure tablets.
We signed on at a new doctor's surgery. Thank God. After new blood checks, that you do when signing on to new practices, my doctor called me with the bad news. 'You have Diabetes 2'. After that fright I went through the Diabetes channel of learning. New diet etc. Back in January, I started getting numbness in my left hand/arm, the last two fingers.
My old doctor sent me for a check with an orthopaedic surgeon - he referred me to have an electrical test on my arms - which came through in this last Summer. The result was that I had a problem with the left Ulnar nerve - also they said the result showed a problem with the right Ulnar nerve - though I didn't feel it so at that stage. Now I have limited strength in both arms. Currently awaiting a meeting with the Orthopaedic surgeon in January to see if he can fix it - or am I stuck with it because of diabetes? Would welcome any knowledge of similar from you guys. By the way - my weight is now down to 14.5 stone - lots of fruit, less carbs. My blood reading was around 13 - now 7-8 after meals. Must be doing something right, hopefully. Not so tired now, but currently suffering from an ear infection picked up by sea swimming - very painful - doctor at hospital says it could take months to clear up! What a year! Still, still alive, and have the joy of my grand children. Any advice on anything you recognise in my ramblings, would be dearly welcomed. God bless you all.

Hi I'm only just dx as well in the last few weeks and put on metformin from today. I'm sorry to hear about your wife and I wish her possitive vibes and prayers for full recovery x..and about your ear infection rotten isn't it..well done on your weight loss. I'm just starting out so I have no advice I'm afraid but I wish you well.
