Hi everyone,
i am sandy i am 33 years old, my mother is insulin dependant.
I had a blood test last week it was a fasting one,
the doctor said that my blood glucose is up, and wants it retesting in a couple of months!
i am worried, as i am drinking alot, if i skip meals i get very tired and i doze off! i sweat alot, then i feel dozy,
i also have a excesive thirst at night, i wee alot at night often getting up once or twice a night!
I am worried should i go back and see the doctor and tell her that things have changed since my last blood test!
i am so scared that i could be diabettic,

Hi Sandy and welcome to the forum ,you really need to go back to your doctor asap and get this sorted. You could become ill very quickly if you are diabetic and do not get medical treatment.Better to get the tests and know for certain one way or the other.

Hi there
the doctor has not said that i have diabetties, she says my blood glucosde is raised,
and she wants the fasting blood rechecked in three months, to be safe and check!
i feel real bad most of the day today, if i skip a meal i feel sick and dizzy! i also sometimes go into high sweat attcks.
i am unsure what my doctor meant by my glucosde higher than it should it! she did not explain what she meant by that!
i am worried that it could be diabetties and i am thinking of trying to get a appointment, i get very drowsy during the day at different times.

Hi Sandy,

Those are certainly fairly typical symptoms of diabetes. If your GP want you to re-test then your blood sugar numbers are probably reasonably borderline. If you were type 1 then you probably would have been prescribed insulin by now.
Have a look at the Success Stories thread and it might give you a few ideas about how to make a big impact on your blood sugar numbers ahead of your next test.

All the best,

fergus

Hi fergus,
thanks for your words, my doctor said they were high level glucose, i am thinking of asking to see her again, as things are getting worse, today i dozed off 5 times! i feel such a let down on my fiancee, we have been to hell and back this last year, as he nearly died in a motorbike accident!
but she would want to re test to be on the safe side, thing is it was a fasting test, i didnot eat for 14 hours, i ended up fainting after the blood test!

Hi sandymaynard

Welcome to ther forum

i would give your doctor a phone and ask what was the actual result of your fasting tests.

As it could be that yes they are a bit higher than normal, but this increase could be due to the stress that you have faced with your partner and his accident, so that they want to rule this out as a short term blip, and hopefully your sugars should settle down to normal levels..

At this stage it could mean that you need to look after your diet and be aware of not only the visable sugar that Items such as fizzy drinks, and normal sugars contain, but those that are hidden in foods, such as chips pastry, pasta bread etc..

It could be that some of yor symptons could be because you are aware of diabetes and what happens, so when you hit similar symptons that you are connecting these, and they aren't really they problem that you think, but having the actually fasting numbers that your doctor has could actually put all this in it's proper perspective, as you must be worried that if your relative is diabetic theb you might sucume to this as well....

And you have been through so much that all could actually get mixed up etc

Hi
i only found my mum a few weeks ago, as i was adopted by my grandparents, long story cut short!
I don't drink fizzy drinks! I can't drink milk as i am lactose intolerant!
I am not thinking that i have diabetties! i had a eye test that said that i have lost over half of my eyesight,
my doctor then said i needed a blood glucose fasting test! then it came back with that is was a high result! i have been refered to the hospital for my eyes!
i didnot know about any effects of diabetties! i still don't all i know is that my mum is insulin dependant!
I just feel dozzy all the time! i have had a real bad night! up half the night needing a wee and drinking alot! i wake up with a very dry mouth! My gp said that she wants a re test in three months to see what is going off! after a meal i get dozy! i feel so tired!
i have noticed that i am drinking alot!

Hi Sandy,

You're clearly having real problems there and the stress of an uncertain diagnosis is possibly making it worse.
Since your mum is type 1 she'll have a blood glucose meter and, hopefully, plently of test strips. Can you ask to borrow it, test yourself before and 2 hours after eating, then tell us the numbers? We might be able to shed some light on what's happening based on that information.

All the best,

fergus

for your peace of mind i would go back to the drs asap as even if its not diabetes youre obviously not very well :D

Hi fergus,
thing is i live 250 miles away from my mum! she is worried about me! i must admit i am scared as well, as i don't know what to do! i am wondering weither to buy one of the testing machines from my local chemist?
as they are under 10 pounds and testing myself!
I drink water most of the time, as i don't like the taste of fizzy pop, i don't smoke or drink

Hi Sandy,

Buying a meter would be a great idea. If the numbers are as out of whack as some of the symptoms suggest, then you could get yourself to the doctor with good reason not to leave until you've been properly assessed.

Let us know how you get on.

All the best,

fergus

Hi fergus,
picked up a machine in the local chemist sale for £7.99, i thought that was a good choice! i think it would put my mind at ease.

Hi Sandy,

You got yourself a bargain then? Every home should have one!
Let us know how you get on.

All the best,

fergus

Hi there
just started sweating and drinking alot, just tested my blood again, it was 7.9 now!
i am feeling sick and hot and sweaty!

Hi Sandy,

Those numbers are certainly a bit on the high side, but not as bad as they could have been.

We haven't got onto the subject of diet yet, but I'd suggest completely cutting out all sugars and refined grains and starches to see how your blood glucose responds. Avoid the bread, pasta, potatoes, rice and sugars for a few days and see what happens. You might still be able to get to normal blood glucose numbers quite quickly. Do you think you could try that?

All the best,

fergus

Hi fergus,
i don't eat sweets or cake, or bread, i have pasta once a week!
my usual dies is veg and fruit as i am not a great meat eater never have been!
i will give it a go! anything is worth a try! had a night last night where my legs felt very restless all night!
thanks fergus for the help!

Have a read round here

IMO you need to do more tests sooner after eating, it's possible that around 1 hour after eating you are going high and your BG is dropping back rapidly so by the time you test it it is more than halfway back down again. Have a look at his dietary suggestions too, starches are usually the worst offenders but some fruit can be particularly bad, they are basically little bags of sugar water.

These veggies are all good

Fish is especially good, also (sorry) meat, how about chicken? If you don't eat too many carbs fats are not as harmful as you are told. Eggs, nuts, avocados, sorry am I drooling?
