I am 48 and overweight and after a routine urine sample was told by the nurse I had diabetes. Nothing else was said.

There is now a "delay" of 2 weeks before i can have my first appointment with the diabetic nurse.

Is there anything I should be doing in the meantime?

It's good idea to cut down on carbohydrates but overdoing it at this stage might confuse the diagnosis. Go for your appointment where blood samples will be taken and be prepared to change your lifestyle. You will be eating less in the way of sugar and flour products. Potatoes and rice might need to be cut down also. Your doctor or nurse may not mention these things but there are many thousands of members of this site who will remind you when you ask.

@daisy1 has an info sheet that every newbie gets and it is good advice but try to go to your appointment before you start on it. Some people have had such success that when they went for their first appointment the doctor asked them why they were there.

Hi and welcome. Yes, I agree with the Squire. After your next appointment you should review your diet and decrease the carbs and make up with proteins and fats. The nurse may possibly disagree based on NHS teaching but we can arrogantly say we have the condition and know what works! Exercise, of course, is always good.

@Balvaird - Hello and Welcome to the Forum:) If you take sugar in beverages then stop and replace with artificial sweeteners. Avoid sugary drinks - drink more water and cut down on Carbohydrates as Squire Fulwood as already said. Have a good read of the basic information from daisy1 and don't be afraid to ask as many questions as you want.:)
