Hi

The first three are facts you can't do much about.
Weight looks spot on.
What's your strict diet? Low carb for example?
Do you have an HbA1C number?

Where in Canada? I have great memories. One of my favourite countries. (I'm UK)

Hello!
Female
44
Type 2 for over 7 years (took a while to diagnose, had been symptomatic for years and didn't realise it)
About 5ft 8, hovering around 80 kilo's
Dietary control: Ketogenic diet's kept me off of medication for diabetes at least. What diet do you follow? Need any help with anything?
No meds for the T2, plenty of pills and shots for other issues though. ;)

Consider yourself connected. As long as you support the Leafs! (Naaah, we don't go that far. Go Leafs, though!). Seriously, lots of people here who can help or just listen, should you have questions or things you want to vent about. I'm Jo, Dutch, and lived in the GTA for a while (Georgetown, Brantford and Oshawa). That was over 20 years ago though. Never did get rid of the "eh?", but have to admit I haven't tried very hard. ;)

Anyway, like I said... If there's anything folks here can help you with, give us a shout. :)

My grandma used to live in Oshawa. Still have family there. I live north of kingston.

I do keto. Very strict list of foods I eat. I have lost 50 lbs in the last 18 months. Don’t want to lose any more (never thought I would say those words! ).

Kingston, Ontario.

Never made it that far East, think I never got further than a flight to Bancroft or something... You live in a stunning region. :) The Netherlands are a bore in comparison.

Excellent job with the blood sugars! :)

Welcome to the forums. I'm also from Canada, used to live in Ontario, now out west. I have been a member here for some years now and find the support and information shared invaluable.

Another from western Canada. Not sure about those Leafs comments?

(Sorry. I got it hammered into me to root for the underdog. Saw a kid being highly surprised when I wore a Leafs shirt in Toronto... Which I thought was weird, because it was their home turf. Ice. Whatever. Just a joke, nevermind.)

Hi!
Female 47, also GTA
Just came across this post while generally browsing for info on google & decided to register on this forum.
Curious to know how your diet is keeping you off the pills. I had gestational diabetes 3 times (the last one 11 years ago) and was okay for a while. Didn't notice when it started creeping back up & I believe the stresses during the pandemic is what brought it back full-blown. I was diagnosed early this year & in my panic I let the doc put me on metformin against my better judgement. The meds definitely helped while I brought my numbers down the past three months with diet and exercise (I've lost about 6 kgs and am now just under 73 kgs, am 5ft 8, and HbA1c down to 6.6), but the gastrointestinal effects were severe and were too nasty for me to want to ever take a diabetes med again.
Since getting off the metformin 2 weeks ago, things have been a bit erratic. I also think hormones are playing a huge part (got tested for cortisol levels this week & awaiting results) because suddenly I can't tolerate anything.
Also, I have the weirdest gastro symptoms since the metformin - I get very bloated and uncomfortable when I sit and maybe it's the stress from the discomfort because I will jump from a 5.6 to an 8.2 reading after 30 mins of sitting. I just don't understand this. Very frustrated with it.
Feeling quite dismal this week each time I see my numbers (I wear a CGM) and looking to connect with others who manage through diet. All advice welcome!

It'll be a while before your gut recovers, maybe have some (zero sugar) kombucha daily, to help it recover. But all in all, it's the carbs we can't handle. Not just sugars, starches too. https://josekalsbeek.blogspot.com/2019/11/the-nutritional-thingy.html was the way to go for me, and is very likely to work for you too. Just right now, keep in mind you're just starting out and have had metformin wreaking havoc, so... Just try and feel better, let your gut heal some (it's a slow healer so that'll take time most likely) and get a new eating regime in place that works for you. Also, maybe check whether you've been having bloaty foods too much, like cabbages, onion and garlic. While relatively low carb, they can make me swell up like I'm pregnant with quadruplets! So something to watch out for, maybe.

Basically, it can be done!

Thanks for the quick response. Yup, it's the carbs. Starches are not my friend (I discovered in my pregnancy) and I gave up rice + potatoes and some other starchy foods about 15 years ago!
I feel I can handle about 20 - 30 carbs at the very most at one time. But this depends on time of day (which is why I am testing for cortisol) - in the morning, up till about noon or so, my body does not like carbs. With the metformin, I was in a good (but higher than other post-meals) range, but without the metformin it doesn't matter what I eat - I will just be at a 7.2 or 7.5 after breakfast. So some mornings I'll have the low-carb bread with my eggs anyway and just go for a longer walk since I know I won't see lower numbers. Still looking for that perfect breakfast that will keep me in range :(

And yes, the metformin is pure evil. I don't ever hope to take it again. Not having too many bloaty foods - basically anything that goes into my gut makes me bloat immediately & I start getting a headache (I assume this is gut-related) + then check and there is a BG spike. So frustrating!
