Hi everyone! I'm 22 years old and I've been a type 1 diabetic almost 19 years now. My BG levels have been all over the place pretty much all of that time, with the lowest being 0.1 and the highest being >33. Up until the middle of last month the last 3 years have been perfect with an HbA1c of 8.1!
My Dr has changed my insulin from Levemir to Lantus last week from 30 units to 20, he said he was acting as if I were a new diabetic to try and control them. Has anyone done this before and if so has it worked for you?

Hi Bekka welcome to the group.

I'm a type 1 on levemir and have also been on lantus. These insulins are MOST important. My consultant stresses that your basal (long acting) insulin is more important than your bolus (short acting) insulin.
It keeps you stable throughout the day and reduces the risk of ketones. If you skip a meal and don't have your bolus then you are at a higher risk of starvation ketones as you have no insulin at all.
Is there a reason for why you have stopped taking it?

I find lantus a great basal insulin and have been using it for many years, I take it once a day around early evening and this gives me a good 24 hour coverage with very few hypo's.

It might just be that your consultant believes that your Hba1c could be lower if they get the basal insulin right, so it's worth trying and persevering for now to see what results it will bring.
 
Hi and welcome....

I too have been on both these background insulin's although i was on Lantus first, then Levemir.........

This happened because the Lantus was not lasting the full 24 hours and I needed more flexibility which Levemir could provide......

I often take a similar approach if my sugars are out of control and I have left it to build up for too long......

Taking a step back and going back to basics is actually quite a good method of regaining control......

I wouldn't say changing your background is entirely necessary to do this but trying it out will definitely not hurt.....
