Hi all

I've been following this forum for quite a while now. here's my story, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes with my twins, BMI of 29. given metformin and went on to have a normal healthy delivery.
my concern is that since diagnosis my hba1c went from 5% to 9% in six months, I felt unwell and despite asking the docs to prescribe me some testing strips (which were refused) I got some off eBay and they read 24 mmol at which point I was sent to hospital and put on a sliding scale for 3 days. it was a bank holiday weekend and never got to see a diabetic team as I discharged myself with a blood sugar of 13 I've been on a low carb diet ever since and have lost 3 stone since my diagnosis in April.
I'm a bit worried as I don't want to lose anymore weight, feeling really gaunt and lethargic. I'm pretty much eating to my meter HELP needed???

BMI is now 25

Hi,
You don't say what your blood sugar readings are like, are they on the high side? Have you been diagnosed as type 2 following the birth of your babies?
If you're feeling unwell and losing weight without wanting to then I would think it's pretty important that you go and see a doctor, there could be many reasons for it including that you could have been misdiagnosed as type 2 when you're actually type 1.5.
Hope you get it sorted soon :)

My readings have been between 4 and 7 mmol for months now and I feel like I have good control due to my diet.
When I asked my doctor what type I am she said I would be considered type 2.

Yes they will say that and they're not always right either! They told me I was type 2 because I had GD despite the fact my BMI was 23 and i am only 26 years old but then the full blood results showed I'm actually autoimmune and not type 2 at all.

If you are reasonably young and not overweight and u can only keep ur levels in range by very low carbing then u cud be autoimmune slow-onset like me... Because ur in range at the moment it's up to you whether u decide to investigate it further.

If u are autoimmune then gradually ur levels will start to rise despite ur diet being low carb but nobody knows how long that even takes unfortunately....

Diagnosed with GD in 2010, Completely disappeared postpartum. Re-diagnosed December 2012 with type 1.5 diabetes, age 26, BMI 23 currently controlled by only Metformin, 500mg twice a day.
