Hi I’ve been type 1 for 32 years and using lucozade to treat hypos I’ve now got really bad teeth I need extractions and was thinking about full implants anybody in same boat I need advice and a good dentist thanks

My dentist advised me to at least rinse with water after night time hypos....

I believe implants are much more likely to be successful if you have a good hbA1C and don't smoke.

My T1 mother had dentures in her 40s but I'm still holding on to all my teeth after 48 years of T1 and periodically poor control....

Are you currently seeing a dentist? I've had times when I've avoided dentists for years at a time and always found things improve when I get back to regular appointments.

Good luck.

ps Usual caveats about "I am not a dentist" :)

Hi at the moment I don’t have a dentist was wondering can the hospital help as not keen on dentists

Hi @martin1111, As well as dealing with your dental troubles, I guess it is important to have better ways to manage the hypos and prevent them.
Why are they happening? What has been tried to deal with them? If they are frequent despite all manoeuvres to prevent them is use of an insulin pumps a possible strategy ?
And what does the dentist recommend to use to treat a hypo in place of Lucozade?
And could there be other factors leading to dental problems other than exposure to Lucozade ? dental hygiene in general, bruxism ? etc
And I have lost one tooth in 51 years on insulin but my upper jaw and sinus structure is, according to my dentist, not suitable for implantation of a tooth.
Just some thoughts - and my Best Wishes, on you finding the best solution to your problems.

I would suggest asking friends and colleagues for suggestions on dentists.

My dentist told me that she could keep my teeth going forever, the problems come if you get gum issues.

As a T1 diabetic I've found that regular dentist visits are the best preventative as regards tooth trouble. And it's not nearly as bad as you think it may be when you finally get the courage to go.

So my advice is : go see a dentist.

Good luck.
