Went to see a new doctor yesterday who asked - Did you know you are Diabetic!! I had some blood tests done when I left my old doctor but had no follow up - anyway shock over - I am very overweight and so I know that this is the first place to start and have started a no carb diet - worked before! Anyway my doctor has said that with correct dieting we could control it and get it below the 50 (????) it is ( should be <48) can anyoine explain this again to me - I am afraid I got lost with his explanation!!
No tablets have been presecribed but I do have a couple of other contradictions and am taking medication for those - would love to hear about what this all means. My father was type 1 Diabetic and so this does concern me obviously.

Hi and welcome,

I assume the "under 50" means the HbA1c, and you are right that 48 is the starting line for diabetes. Your doctor is probably just giving you an initial target to aim for by your next HbA1c test. Out of interest, what was your HbA1c? Did you ask for a print out of the blood results? If not, I advise you to do so. You will need them further down the line for comparisons, and they should also include cholesterol and lipid results and any other bits and bobs you had.

Well done on starting a "no carb" diet - impossible to achieve by the way! There are carbs in most foods, it is more a question of reducing the carbs to a level you are and your body are happy with and which you can sustain. Have a look at this thread, which you may find helpful

Do have a good read round the forums and make sure you get answers to all your questions. Good luck. :)

(I forgot to say, you will need a glucose meter if you really want to do this properly.)

Hello Suepea,
sorry to hear your new,s, however, don't give up stick to your treatment regimen, be confident that your efforts will benefit you, and denial is not an acceptable option, change your diet, swap foods that are high in fat and sugar with fruit and vegetables, change your daily activity plan gentle exercise, and keep in regular contact with your health care team, I hope this will help

Hi. Yes, it was probably your HBa1C number. This blood test measures your average blood sugar over the previous 3 months. Metformin is often prescribed for many of us and it does help a bit with blood sugar reduction and insulin resistance resulting from being overweight

I'm not sure swapping high fat foods for fruit is a good idea for diabetics, with or without weight to lose. We have to be very careful with fruit as it contains a lot of sugar. This may be natural sugar, but is sugar nonetheless and will raise blood sugar levels in most diabetics. Most of us find berries in moderation, or a small apple, not too bad, but best eaten as part of a meal with accompanying fat such as cream or FF yogurt. The fat slows down the metabolism and hence the rise in blood sugars.
