Hi, I am very new to this game! Here’s my story

LYDIAW

Newbie
I am very new to this game! I was diagnosed with type 2 in January 2025.
I went for a routine eye test, I am 75, a and the optician found five small bleeds behind each eye I was then told to go straight to the doctors and have my blood pressure taken which was 234 / 90 put on statins and blood pressure tablets straight away, I hasten to add I had no bad symptoms, the following day my doctor took a blood sample and said that I had to go to the hospital to be flushed out, my reading was 25.3, because of the amount of glucose in my system....took most of the day on a drip. I was then put on Humulin1 and told I had type 2, and my dosage was 14, skip a few weeks..... The diabetic nurse put my insulin up to 18 then 20 then 22.....but I felt I was too high as I kept dropping below 4.0 I mentioned this to her and she said drop it down to where you feel comfortable I am now on 18 and stable, I inject once a day in the morning, but in the meantime time I have been diagnosed with womb cancer and bad to have a complete hysterectomy in May...so I have had a bit of a time of it lately, my diabetes also caused concerned regarding my Robotic Hysterectomy, I was put in a drip with insulin and glucose before the op. I managed my food quite well, but eating out still stumps me and I go for basics, fish and veggies. I cook all my own food from scratch at home including sugar free cakes and biscuits....I feel I have come a long way from going to the opticians, but resting at the moment, but getting there! Our NHS has been wonderful I have been checked out for a yearly eye examination at my local hospital and my doctors have tested my feet and are every pleased with my progress.....that's my story

You've been through the wringer indeed... I'm sorry you went through all that, but somehow I have a feeling you're far from throwing in the towel, and still ready for a fight. Once rested up, of course. Diabetes responds to other issues in wildly varying ways, so do take it easy on yourself while you recover from the surgery, eh.

Anyway, welcome, and I hope we'll be of some use. I'm not on insulin myself, so I tend to avoid giving advice that could turn out to be exactly wrong for your situation, but basically, can't go far off the path with "take it easy", methinks.

Hang in there!
Jo

I was/am a very similar position diabetes wise I was told in Jan my Hba1c was 129 immediately put on metformin building up to the full dose over a month. Due to it's eventual horrific side effects (with me) I asked the Diabetic Nurse to go on Insulin. Teujeo and arranged an appointment to go and see her and do first injection with her. Also during this time due to my high Hba1c I was sent for a pancreatic cancer CT scan (my mother died with that) so after getting an all clear I went on with the Insulin at 10 units every week getting a call off the nurse for my blood results weekly and being raised each week on insulin units. I am presently on 28 units (probably go up to 32 on Thursday). Due an eye screening in about a month which I am dreading,
Just to let you know we are both in a similar position well done
