I have increased my Insulin to 150 units twice a day Novomix 30. Is this to much ? My weight is 20st and I don't exercise. It used to be 80 units but did not bring down my blood/sugar level. It is now about 5. Please advise me.

If it works for you then no it isn't too much however have you spoke to your health care team? And how comes you do not exercise???

if your blood sugar readings suggest this new dose is doing the job then yes........its is fine..........

obviously larger insulin doses can contribute to weight gain and a difficulty in removing weight, so it should always be a priority, second to stable blood sugars of course, to take as little insulin as you can......

The problem with more insulin is that your body becomes resistant to it, so it will have less effect on your blood sugars. However, insulin also affects both weight and hunger levels, which do not benefit from resistance. In layman's terms, you inject more, you get hungrier, you eat more, your weight increases, your insulin resistance also increases. So you inject more, and the cycle continues. Looking at a change of diet may benefit you more in the long run.

A reduction in your weight, getting more active and a change in your diet will lower your insulin requirements.

I think you need to review your diet as you are probably in a vicious circle of too many carbs and more and more insulin to manage it with insulin resistance making that very difficult. If you are not currently managing your carbs then do set a daily limit. Many of us go for something like 150gm/day or less. As you reduce your carbs and hence your weight then do measure regularly to avoid hypos by reducing insulin as necessary to maintain a good blood sugar level.

To be honest with you I was taking 120 units of novomix 30 a day. And I went to my last consultant appointment and asked to go on to basal / bolus regime and been referred to the DAFNE course so as I can be taught how to carb count and get even better control of my diabetes. Since changing to this system my weight is staying the same but my last hba1c was down to 54. Hoping to get on to DAFNE soon so as I can get sorted even more. It may not work for you but have a chat with your diabetes team and see about changing as you have more control over things than a premixed insulin

It is too easy
Cutting the major carbs got me from 130 units per day to zero and 4 tabs.

You only have to cut out boring food and replace it with tasty food,

Boring food is potato, bread cereals, pasta and rice You will be eating tasty food and the weight will drop off.

Your challenge is simple learn to cook interesting food.

Sounds good advice....a list of tasty foods would be a bonus...I shall get me some LC bread today and try it not that i need lose weight but will try anything to help lower the BS levels..

Everything in the greengrocers is tasty so we can eat everything except potato sweet potato and fruit (fruit in limited quantities it is full of sugar.)

Anything from the butcher

Nothing from the baker

Read the labels in the supermarket for total carbs

All the curries and spices are fine as far as I know

Look for hot pot recipes with diet coke or other diet drinks or red wine for an up market taste

We are currently changing our cooking and we will be using our slow cooker 2 days per week with a double up quantity so that means we will have 4 days evening meals slow cooked over 8 hours on slow setting.

So that leaves 3 evening meals we have to cook. Maybe an Asian stir fry with Asian condiments all the usuals and snow peas on top, a BBQ and we usually do a double lot of meat and sausages so then we only have to microwave veg for a second meal.

Keep it clean and easy and reduce the cooking days.

Every second day we make nut flour cakes in the electric pie make or the microwave and fill them with sweetened microwaved berries

Flat coconut and almond and cheese bread for breakfast with berries and gelatin jam and we can have cream and dairy.

We can have beans. We do a satay with beans and cabbage and corned beef ( delish) Salads with the lot and some flat nut bread if you choose.
