hello my name is jackie but everone calls me jaxx. I have just been told im in the diabetic range after two fasting glucose tests but we have know this for a yr now. I am currently feeling very lost as i have been following a low carb diet for a year with reduced fats sugar and all the nice things in life but still no weight loss. The dr today told me I have to loose weight and recommended slimming world. I told him that I have been dieting and that i do not eat processed food, drink fizzy drinks, eat sweets or even have sugar in my coffee. he looked at me with a face of disbelief and then decided to put me forward to a dietician . then said thanks and good bye. I am not sure what else to do so any help would be greatly appreciated because im not sure what avenue to take next

welcome,

I am overweight so cant really dish out advice.........

what is a typical day for you in terms of food....?

whats your activity levels like?

Hello and welcome. You are in the right place for help and support, so a little more information on your typical daily foods would be helpful. I've lost 3 stones to reach my goal weight and am managing to keep my blood sugars fairly well controlled.

average day
breakfast two slices wholemeal toast with olive oil spread roughly tablespoon divided between both with a cup of coffee no sugar and again about a tablespoon of milk.
i walk 0.4 miles to get a lift every morning
im at the school by 7am and start work (science teacher)
during the day im on my feet from the arrival to school till 10:50 (1st break)
then i have an apple yoghurt ( i check the labels to ensure they are fat free and suger free) cup of coffee again very little milk.
sit down time five minutes or eat while standing break finished by 11:05
on feet again till 1:10 (2nd break) then its either two rivita with edam thin slice or grated plus coffee orther luches have been salad leaves with a tablespoon of caser dressing and parmisan shavings (tsp), salad leaves cucumber and boiled eggs, or chicken breast.
sit time again five minutes break finishes at 1:25
on feet unitl 530 -6:00 which is when i go home walk 0.4 miles after being droped off.
evening meal can consist off brown rice (approximatley 1/2 cup cooked) with a tikka flavoured chicken breast or chicken breast new potates (4 halved) with green beans carrots and peas (veg varies to what i have but most is consumed over a week)
snacks if i have any are carrot sticks cucumber sticks or cellery sticks
this week i have had one chelsea bun and a buttons ice cream
but there is no soda or cakes or crisps in my diet
i roughly drink four evian 500ml bottles a day of water

so your pretty active and eat well...........

how overweight are you, I don't imagine much.......

is the weekend the same with food?

im obese and yea weekends are pretty much the same
we do occasionly go out for a meal and i am terrible i go to the harvester and full on raid the salad cart with ribs (i know naughty) but this is roughly once every two months if that. sundays roast day which is 90% veg gravy is the bad thing on this but i am sparigly with that on mine
most saturdays im out walking around spending time with the family as its the one day off i have and if im in i would work so were out and i don't drive so we walk everywhere. sundays activity is down to walking the dog and trips to the shop for an excuse to leave the house as I mainly do lesson prep

Hi again,

Do you count your carbs and calories? In my opinion this is necessary to keep control of your eating, and also keep a rigid food diary of exactly what passes your lips, along with amounts of carb and calorie content. My Fitness Pal is a good way of doing this.

The 2 slices of wholemeal toast, ryvitas, rice of any colour and potatoes, cooked carrots and even peas are not good for blood sugar levels and can be calorific. They should be eaten with great care, or not at all - and the bun and ice-cream are a bit naughty (but nice)! Despite all the brain washing of the past 20 years or more, it is carbs that make you fat and increase blood sugars, not dietary fats. There is no need to be afraid of good fats such as butter, yogurt, cheese etc. They won't make you fat if you are also on a low carb diet.

if you are confirmed as diabetic or pre-diabetic, what you need to do is to buy a blood glucose meter and testing strips, then start testing out your meals to see what they do to your BS levels. You may be in for a few surprises, especially the toast, rice and spuds.

I do count carbs hence why I know the measurements ive eaten. Ive been trying to lose weight for a year and because I know that a carb converts to glucose i changed to more complex carbs and kept a check on quantity. over the past year I can honestly say I have watch what i eat counted carbs reduced fat intake changed from white to brown measured amounts removed items. i had access to a meter and im between 7.8 and 15 on this meter so i changed my diet to stay closer to the 7.8 never really get lower that that even my fasting glucose was that. I am not sure what else I can change as i am also limited with food I can stomach eating as i do not like lentils, pulses beans. I am not a fish fan at all. hence why so much chicken.

How many grams of carbs do you eat in a typical day? And how many calories?

As far as blood sugars are concerned, I would seriously reduce the toast and potatoes, and try not to have too many carbs per meal. Potatoes with cooked carrots and peas is probably too many at once. Fats have no effect whatsoever on raising blood sugars but do slow down digestion, so with fat on your meal your spike will be lower, although you may not return to base levels quite as quickly. It is the height of the spikes that cause complications over a period of time. Sorry, I'm finding this hard to describe properly! Brain fog.

I lost my weight over a few months by keeping calories at about 1200 and reducing my carbs whilst changing over from low fat rubbish to the real thing. My personal average carb intake for July is 63g a day. Many on here are considerably lower than that. Some are not so restrictive. We are all different.
perhaps you could try testing out your meals by testing immediately before you eat, then at 1hr and 2hrs after your first bite. The Type 2's on here tend to aim for under 7.8 at 2 hours. The NICE guidelines say under 8.5 but this is an old guideline and needs revising.

There are some very good threads on the forums about low carb diet, what people eat for dinner, what they have eaten today, loads of ideas and recipes. I'm another one that doesn't like pulses or beans apart from peas, but I eat a lot of salmon, haddock, beef, chicken and lamb. Mushrooms and a few tomatoes are good with bacon and eggs for a weekend breakfast, or omelettes, scrambled eggs etc.

hi my carb for last month was averaged at 62g a day I am looking at changing more in my diet and the menu I gave on here was an example my carb level (bread rice and pasta) is almost non existent.
I do not own a meter yet as I have only just been told today that my fasting was as high as it was and apart from being referred to a dietician and advised to attend slimming world which im afraid I cannot afford. As I have been trying to lose weight for the past year the first thing I did was cut the carbs I lived off salad chicken and fruits and veg which was the main component of my diet it was very varied and all carbs, calories and fats carefully monitored this went on for six months - and I lost nothing
I will be checking if its not enough or too much of something but every counter I have used said I should have lost weight.
im not sure what to do next do I just sit and wait for the appoint with the dietician or call the diabetic nurse and see if they will help????

It seems you have tried everything. Have you had any thyroid tests?

As for Slimming World, I do believe you can get on a course for free via your GP. I'm sure I've read this somewhere on this forum.

Good luck with the dietician and also with your diabetes.
