Hi, long time no post I guess!

Hi, I haven't posted for a while. I should have known that my health is more important than many things. But have been really busy as the exams coming up and bits.

By the way, just few questions to ask all those diabetes experts here :)

Well, I was diagnosed with the diabetes, oh wow already?, 10 weeks ago.

Doctors seem to struggle with diagnosing my type yet but it's leaning towards to type 1.

So, I was put under metformin, novorapid and lantus as my type was unclear so they thought treating for both types at the moment sound about right.

Well, my last result at diagnosis and April
At diagnosis
Hb1Ac: 11.1%
BG level: 22.8

April
Hb1Ac: 8.1%
BG level: few hypos and usually around 5.5-7.6 with few 9's and 10's but no higher than 10.7
C-Peptide: 1.0
GAD antibody negative.

So, doctors thought this is like type 2 as my c-peptide was normal and antibody was negative. Then they said something about c-peptide could be normal cause they found some problems with my kidney which I am scheduled an ultrasound for end of the month.

I decided to try myself out for few days so off novorapid and only on metformin+lantus for 4 days.
For those 4 days, my urine ketone level was off the roof, I was in and out of 20's and constant nausea I was about to throw up and was very fatigued. So I mentioned it to my doctor and she said it also suggests type 1 but then antibody was negative so another blood sample was sent off.

After few days in April, I accidentally lost my metformin (even till now) so I was only on lantus+novorapid. Then something magical happened. It's like I eat carbs and when I even forgot few shots of novorapid in between, I was still managing under 7 every day until now. I just had rice and bread with curry, quite a big portion with only 4 units of novorapid (I believe what I just ate accumulated up to about 200g of carb) and still managing 5.3 2 hours later. I don't want to be hopeful like I am cured but just wondering what this is.

Also, one of the reasons why doctors suspected type 2 was that my father was diagnosed with diabetes at age of 48. He's now 55 and he was very ill 2 weeks ago. Doctors now diagnosed him as type 1.5 and say he needs insulin for life from now on as his c-peptide was somewhere around 0.03. When he was diagnosed I believe it was around 1.9.

I am just a bit curious all this type thing as it's quite important to me for some reasons.

If anyone can walk me through on my circumstance, it'd be greatly appreciated.

I would hazard a guess that you are type 1 but in the honeymoon period. Your bodies reaction to going without insulin (urinary ketones) almost certainly rules out type 2. I think it is very common for type 1's to have a "honeymoon" period initially after diagnosis where their insulin requirements go right down (as seems to be the case with you). I'm afraid it doesn't usually last, but you never know - I will send lots of positive thoughts your way!

Type 2 on Metformin, diagnosed Jan 2013, ultra low carber, Hba1C at diagnosis 8% (11mmol), now between 4.5 and 5.5 mmol. 20kg lost so far :)

Yup sounds like honeymoon period to me - I'm going through it myself!

The cells in your pancreas haven't packed it in entirely yet, but they will. Once you started injecting insulin you alleviated a bit of the stress on them. They've perked up a bit and are working really hard to keep you at a "normal" level

But sadly it can't last. You may have weeks or months so enjoy it while you can!
