I don't know much about diabetes but I need to learn as the person I hold dearest has Type 1. I don't want to harass them so I thought this would be the best place to ask

What is the highest/lowest blood sugar level you can have with being immediately ill?
(Theirs can fluctuate from 2 to 32...)

Why do they urinate for so long?

Why do they not make sperm? Can they ever make sperm? (I know it something to do with a muscle not working and the sperm going to the bladder)

How can you stop/ease the sore feet?

Whats the best thing to eat when hypo?

Any help appreciated!

Hi can I ask how long this person has been diagnosed for and have they seen their doctor recently... a lot of those things would concern me enough to see a doctor... :)

The range of blood sugars that is ideal for a person with diabetes is 3.5-8.

Unacceptable is under 3. You are likely to have an accident due to low blood sugars.

Not great but not that uncommon are blood sugar levels 8-13.

After 13 you need to find out what is going wrong and fix it and keep an eye out for ketones particularly if you feel ill or even just a bit rough or have any sort of dehydrating illness.

People with diabetes pee a lot because the high blood sugar is passed out in the urine and it attracts more water with it.

Sperm supply should be normal in all diabetics. I think you are describing a thing called retrograde ejaculation. This is not normal as far as I know. A urologist may be able to help.

The sore feet is due to nerve damage. The solution is to normalise blood sugars. Even then it takes 5 or more years to get full reversal. Some medications such as duloxetine, amityrptiline, gabapentin, pregabalin and opiates can help the pain but they don't address the underlying problem which is nerve damage.

The best thing to eat when hypo is a drink of lucozade or liquid glucose or eat some glucose sweet. These work the fastest and when you correct a hypo fast it is easier not to overcorrect and go too high.

Hey guys, thanks for the info

AFAIK they have been diabetes type one for almost 30 years now and they go to the doctors and clinics quite frequently. I think during the early years control was bad and therefore has led to retrograde ejaculation, and severe nerve damage
Even now they don't really watch what they eat and test their blood maybe four times a day, roudabout eating and sleeping usually. If it's high take insulin, if its low, eat sweets. It doesn't seem to be very regulated, but from reading this forum I see that lots of people keep a close eye on what they eat and their blood sugar.

I'm worried about them, cos they seem to thing any damage that can be done is done and its just something they live with every day. I know diabetes cannot be reversed, but they act as though its too late to do anything about it.
