I am 65 years young, married for second time and have been living in Southern Spain for 4 years. Prior to this my hubby and I travelled for 2 years in a motorhome.
At the end of our motorhome trip I was diagnosed with prediabetes by a HbA1c test.
I worked very hard, complying with an NHS funded support app and 6 weekly counselling. I lost 14 pounds and my blood sugars corrected to normal levels.
However, during the very high temps of summer my activity level dropped dramatically,I gained 10 pounds and won myself another warning of prediabetes.

I am particuarly anxious to avoid diabetes due to growing up with a poorly controlled diabetic mother, who sadly died at 58 years, minus both her legs and sight.
My brothers are both diabetic. Im not sure how well controlled and with what.

I am now taking advantage of Abbotts FreeStyle 2 sensor.
I am finding it extremely useful to monitor my glucose levels but would be keen to hear of others personal experiences of using the same system

Im glad to have found this forum. I thrive on mutual support and knowledge sharing.
My hubby hasn't got a clue about the risks of diabetes,so it will be useful to have others in the same boat to discuss things with and to know that any information shared is up to date and legitimate.

Ultimately, I want to avoid medication, however, if the restriction of my diet are so limited and not sustainable I am accepting of appropriate help. Can anyone share their thoughts and experiences regarding their commencing medication and consequences of a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes?

Welcome to the forums. Sorry to hear about your mum. I'm sure others will be along shortly who will be able to help you. Many Type 2s here follow a very low carb diet and put their diabetes into remission. What are your diet restrictions?

Hi @Twoosie and welcome.
have a good read around the various threads and you'll find views on most of your questions.

my personal take on Cgms is that they are invaluable for learning which foods our individual bodies tolerate, and which they don't. Now I'm no longer a novice, I use one just 2 or 3 times a year, mostly when I'm away and not in control of cooking my own food. The graphs of carb induced spikes are burnt into my brain, so very motivating.

My personal view on medication is to avoid it as long as possible. To do that I eat low carb. I no longer carb count and its a normal way of life for me now. I don't see it as restrictive, it's healthy for my body.

Can't help you with the sensor, never used one myself, but from what I gather, the Mediterranean low carb diet should be doable in Spain? Cheeses, veg, olives, cold cuts/cured meats etc aplenty. Maybe something to look into?

My uncle's lack of legs and my grandmother's mortally damaged heart/aorta got me to tackle my T2, once I knew how. I wasn't going to saddle my husband with more worries for my well-being than strictly necessary, so I get where you're coming from.
Good luck!
Jo
