hi im sammy.
i live in birmingham
im type 1 diagnosed in march 2007.
over a period of 3/4 weeks. i developed symptoms i was drinking loads going to the toilet every 10 minutes, i lost loadsss of weight. then my mum thought i had it and she took me to the GP, and said i did have it and he phoned the hospital and i went right away and they started me on insulin.

since then ive had a few problems i stopped taking my insulin for weeks and weeks on end, to make my self ill, i lost so much weight i kept doing it, i got ketones the highest i seen it by testing at that time was 6.5. i ended up in hospital twice and now im struggling but im trying to do my best, i do have an eating disorder and i suffer with depression, anxiety and panic attacks. i dont go out very much because im so nervous about being around other people, i find it hard to talk to people aswell.

this month i went on a type 1 education course, it just finished today, called BERTIE, its like a DAFNE course. i think it was very helpful.

I hope to meet some people on here maybe to make some friends aswell.

if you want to ask me anything you can ill try answer it best i can.

Hi Sammy.
Welcome to the forum. Take a good look around and if you have any questions just ask when you are ready.

My question to you is what did this BERTIE course consist of, what did you find good about it ?

hi everyone thanks for the welcome

the bertie course was for a month every tuesday.

we learned about carbohydrate counting, and nutrition.
understanding clinic visits
traveleing
pregnancy
ketones and illness
blood glucose monitoring

and lots more stuff.

we also kept food and blood glucose diarys and talked about it at the beginning of the day.

i thought it was good because i already knew most of the stuff but its a good refresher.

its also weird how some of the people there had diabetes for like 10 and 20 years and didnt know what ketones were or what a pump was or anything like that

i found it good because i dont go out much and im trying to get myself back meeting people so it was good for that aswell. and because i find it hard to talk and i am ashamed of my illness. ive never met other diabetics before so that was new to me aswell. it was good to see how other people manage there illness too.

i think this course is rather new though so hopefully it will catch on and be in more hospitals.
