Hi, i have to joined the site and was wondering if any one could advise on what cereals are low in carbs? my husband is a type 2 and has been advised to try the low carbs diet has his hba1c readings are 10%+ and we are finding it very difficult to find suitable foods to eat, he has only been doing it for 5 days but cannot seem to get is blood readings below 11 and they are rising to 17 and he seems to be trying his best and i feel so deflated for him although i try not to show it, any advice would be appreciated. thanks

Hi there
Alot of breakfast cerals contain carbs in some form or another,
How about scrambled egg or omlete for breakfast for him?
Have you been cutting out potaoes, pasta, rice, choclate.crisps,Some crackers,
As these few items and lots more contain carbs,
i don't know alot but i know that it can take time time to come down with the blood sugar's!
Does your husband have tea and coffee with sugar in? This will need adressing as well,
You need to avoid all sugar drinks as well! This includes, coke, pepsi, Pepsi max is not too bad! Lemonade,Juice,Cordial,
There is alot to take in!
his sugars are very high! The thing is as his sugars come down he will feel better! I hope my little bit of info helps, there are lots of good people here who know more than me about it all
Sandy

Thanks for your reply sandy, everything you have stated we are doing but it is very good of you to point these out, it just seems so difficult has he loves his bread although only granary.

I was diagnosed type 2 around a month ago.

Went for a blood pressure test, wanted my cholestrol checked so i went for a fasting blood blood test.

Was told i was diabetic, no i wasnt, after a further blood test yes i was.

I was in denial and going to do a runner, just as well i took my partner who is a midwife and told me to calm down.

My blood glucose was 18 and after a fortnight i got a meter and it was around 6 and 7 on consecutive mondays.

Tested first thing in the morning as it rises as you eat, told people test 1 hour before a meal and two hours after to see what foods give them blood sugar spikes.

I take it as a wake up call if i want to be in good health and live to 90.

Life style changes have to be made , i.e exercise, eating habits, loosing weight, looking after my feet etc.

Advice i got from the doctor was sugar was my enemy stay away from beans and eat bread, pasta, rice etc.

Was also told to have a treat on a sunday or for weddings birthdays etc, after that advice was nil.

Went straight on the net and learned loads, too much to take in.

I am on Metoformin 200mg a day.

When you come on here or diabetics forum advice is exercise, stay off carbs eg, bread, rice, pasta as they all turn to sugar.

Cerial is bad especially oatmeal which gave me diarohea when on metoformin and when out jogging could prove nasty.

On another thread ham and eggs are good for your diet and i will be on them this morning.

Hardest thing is loosing weight so i think i will have to go on a low carb diet as nothing else is working, used to jog for a fortnight till i hurt something in the sole of my foot and can not run so i will have to put new brakes on my bicycle and use that.

Diabetes is a huge learning curve with overwelming information to learn as my first priority is loosing weight which is the battle i am loosing fast.

See the doc in 2 months so got till then to sort it out.

Got a letter today for a diet retinopathy screening service i have to attend in may to check my eyesight as diabetes can damage to the blood vessels in your eyes and sometimes my eyesight went fuzzy which i put down to old age.

Davey.

I'm pleased to see you've been advised to cut carbs, what a welcome change from the usual advice!

Frankly there are NO good cereals, especially at breakfast! Having said which I can handle a couple of oatcakes, ryebread only later in the day and wheat not until evening, not an uncommon pattern. Some people can eat breakfast cereal or muesli at night, some can get away with low carb Special K or similar, but with your husband's numbers I'd be tending to avoid all starches.

I favour fish, or meat, with salad for breakfast, here are some more ideas
