Hiya. New here but diagnosed t2 in 1999 lost weight and went in remission in 2009 back on meds in 2013. Currently having a bad time of things with high hbaic. Only just been noted as wasn't having any monitoring through the pandemic. With hindsight I reckon it's been bad for a while. Lots of UTI etc. Currently waiting on diabetic unit appointment, been 4 weeks since gp referral.

I've got some stuff going on that I hadn't associated with my diabetes but now I'm sure they are. It's almost like constant PMT, depressed, very irritable, angry at everything/one totally out of character. Sticky eyes with blurriness. I've ended up buying testing stuff, already had a monitor, and my readings are all in high teens

I need help and support. Please don't start on about my diet, its sugar free, low carb, high protein. Any carbs are low gi. My weight has gone up by 2 stone in last 5 years. Yet no dietary changes, although could be age related.

Sorry for the huge post. Sorry if its in wrong place.

Hi Smiter and welcome.
Yep, blurry sticky eyes was a sign of my high bg, and I understand that moodiness and anger and depression can all be worse if sugars are high too. Bummer, isn't it this diabetes lark?
What kind of thing do you eat on a daily basis? I know you do low carb but there are soemthings that might be triggering you.
If it isn't food then it might be the timing or frequency of, or exercise either lack of or wrong type. There's been great research into all this since you were first diagnosed.
If you could let us have an insight into your usual days we'll see what support we can suggest.
Your meter will soon show you too.
Welcome and well done for coming forward. No judgements here, we are all in the same boat.

Being honest not much of a doer of anything just usual household stuff. Never have been so nothing changed there.

Hi @Smiter55 and welcome to the forums.

Running in the high teens isn't great and I can well believe that it isn't making you feel too good.

Can I ask what meds you are on at the moment?

I am currently on metformin 1000mg x 1 daily and sitagliptin 50mg also 1 daily my gp has said I need this changed but I've got to wait for this appointment with the diabetes clinic it's really worrying me that I've had these symptoms for at least a year and not been recognised as being my diabetes. The pandemic has a lot to answer for with people's health. Goodness knows how many people have serious illnesses untreated because routine tests stopped.

Sorry I made a typo.... my eyesight isn't too good.
I meant timing or frequency of food/meals
As well as timing , frequency or intensity of exercise.

You might find you benefit from restricting the times in which you eat eg cutting down to twice or once a day or skipping the odd meal
And/or introducing some walking after meals. Even 10 or 20 minutes brings a reduction in bg in some people

Hello and welcome @Smiter55

I am sorry that you are where you are at the moment. Like with many things in life sometimes the symptoms of the issue make it so much more difficult to take any steps which may help.

The reason people do go on about diet is that it makes such a difference, however, as with most things other factors count as well. For blood sugar levels things like stress, lack of sleep and yes even the weather can be factors. I'm someone for whom stress and lack of sleep are factors which I feel I can't completely control so I (being a bit of a control freak) focus on things that I feel are within my control.

Anyway-when do you expect your diabetic appointment? I'm in Australia so very different here.

Good luck and welcome.

Hi Smiter55,

Welcome to the forums.

Sorry you are having a hard time right now and hope things improve for you soon. Yes it's very annoying that the pandemic continues to carry on messing our lives up and causing so many delays in medical appointments etc. Hope your comes through soon for you.

Please keep posting and letting us know how you're getting on :)

To be honest it's anyone's guess as to when I will get an appointment there is so much backlog. All I can do is wait. Before the pandemic it would have only been 3 or 4 weeks, now it could be months. Lack of sleep may well be a factor however my lack of sleep is being caused by the high sugar, I'm at the toilet every hour or so.

I phoned the clinic today and was informed they had me in for an appointment beginning November I explained that I wasn't coping very well mentally or physically and she's just called me with an appointment on Thursday.
Brilliant news!

Great news! I know it can be very difficult but make sure you explain exactly how you are feeling and how long. I'm one of those people that have to sit down and make a list before hand so I don't forget anything, maybe that will help you too.

Do let us know how you get one :)

Just back from clinic. They are writing to gp with suggestions of additional medication. I've to wait till my copy of the letter arrives and get in touch with gp so really I'm none the wiser except I now know my a1c was 87 not that I know what that means. He is also surprised that I'm getting such high readings on my monitor.

With current postal strikes goodness knows how long it will be before the letter gets to me. Im also quite shocked that it isn't done electronically.

Had a diabetic review on Tuesday. They still don't have the letter from the hospital that's been 12 days. She's organised ketostix on prescription for me and I've to do bloods before food, if over 15, which they are all the time right now, I've to dip for ketone if ketones are oresent ive to seek out medical advise/attention. Shame my postal pharmacy is out of stock at the moment seems to be happening with a lot of meds just now. She found no signs of neuropathy so that's good. Shes also happy on my carbs consumption.

Just wish they would hurry up and sort my meds out to get my sugars down.

Hi again Smiter55, So sorry to hear you still haven't been sorted out with your meds yet and hope they do hurry up and do it.
Yes I have had a few problems getting some of my meds of late but they have managed to sort me out within a few days, hope it's the same for you. [hugs]

Believe it or not my gp still hasn't received a letter. I contacted the secretary fir the diabetes specialist and she informed me that as it wasn't marked as being urgent it went to bottom of the pike. It's now typed but has to wait on the prof's signature. In the meantime I'm still getting readings of over 17 at all times of the day. Been 6 weeks since my hospital appointment it's crazy.

Today I got a call from our gp pharmacist, explaining to me why I wasn't suitable, at the moment, for various meds the decision is to start me on 1mg glimepiride. Mot before time especially as my before meal reading this evening was 22.7. Took pill before eating, just done bloods again and still high but 18.9. So going in right direction. Just hoping my weight doesn't increase.
