Hello!

My name is Krissy :)
I am a Type 1, have been for 2 years now... I nearly died when I was diagnosed as my doctor said I had a water infection.
I did ask him if I could be diabetic and he laughed at me and said "No, you don't have diabetes"... The next day I collapsed and went into a coma.
My levels are up and down, but I am still working on it. I just thought maybe talking to other diabetic may be useful!

I hope to get to know a lot of you! :D

Hi Krissy,

Just thought I would post because ur thread made me remember how lucky I was when I got diagnosed. I had had GD in 2010 but after being ill And losing weight I took myself off to the doctors in December last year as I just knew the diabetes was back. I walked into his office and he asked me what was wrong and I told him I thought the diabetes was back. He asked me if I was pregnant. I said no I wasn't. He confirmed my age with me (26) and then my BMI (22) and he then turned round and laughed and said he didn't think I was diabetic but to quickly go and do a urine sample and he would test my blood just to 'put my mind at rest'.

So off I trot and do the water sample and he takes my BS level (14.5mmol at this stage!) but he is still not convinced so he tests my urine and what do u know? 4+++ ketones present!! Only then did he take me seriously and call a consultant at the local diabetes clinic because I was 'baffling' him as I was too 'young and too thin' to be type 2 diabetic but I MUST be type 2 since I had GD... Wrong! Turns out I'm not type 2 at all but LADA....

It's honestly shocking sometimes as to how narrow minded some GPs are and there really needs to be some sort of re-test for doctors who have been away from education for a certain amount of time because they are so set in their ways and its dangerous!

Lets hope no1 else has to go through what you went through and that they do something about it in the NHS sooner rather than later.....

Welcome to the forum :-)

Diagnosed with GD in 2010, Completely disappeared postpartum. Re-diagnosed December 2012 with type 1.5 diabetes, age 26, BMI 22 currently controlled by only Metformin, 500mg twice a day.

Thank Elaine,

It is so shocking, my mum is the one who made me ask him if I could be diabetic (She has NO medical experience!)
No one in my family has it either so how she knew I have no idea!

Everyone wanted me to sue (is that the right spelling? lol) him but I just wrote him a letter. I wanted to make sure that he didn't put anyone else's life at risk! I do not remember what my sugar levels were however my other half said the paramedic said it was shockily high and I was lucky that he found me in time... they spent the first 4 hours I was in hospital trying to keep my heart beating :(

But luckily I am still here! :)

I am glad you got through it and your doctor listened to you!! :)

Thank you faeoj :) Nice to meet you too!

Hi Krissy! Welcome to the forum! Sorry to hear of your terrible time.. If you've got something on your mind just ask a few questions.. There is lots of people that can help and many that are willing to help :) and hopefully you will find your answers :)

All the best!

Thank you Kerry :) I am looking forward to picking everyone's brains :D

You are most welcome :) I've found this forum has helped me and been a secondary support since being diagnosed with type 1.. I have had type 1 for a year and 4 months and I'm still working hard to control myself and I do struggle with a few things but that's to be expected when you are new to it all, so asking people on here really helps and I've learnt so much about diabetes from this site :) and the people are very friendly here too :)

Well I haven't had it much longer! I am on 2 years now... Even though it doesn't feel that long!!

My issue is I love food tooooo much!! Especially carbs!!! :(

Sorry to hear that :( I still feel like I was only diagnosed yesterday sometimes.. It's really strange lol

CARBS are my worst enemy and probably many others worst enemy, I hate them but sometimes it's hard to find foods with low carbs in them.. Especially if its foods you like.. I'm awaiting to hear from my DSN about when I go on the DAPHNE course.. I've been waiting a while now and really want to go.. It will be so much help with what to eat ect.. Fingers crossed it will be soon :)

Can you imagine what it will be like when we have had it 20+ years

Awesome, you can pass your wisdom onto me!! I could really use the help :P lol
I haven't changed what I eat.. Apart from less sweets and cakes, and no sugary drinks...
That is the only thing I really changed.

Oh my goodness 20 years from now! Wow that's really hard to think what it would be like! I'd be 41 and hopefully id be in great condition lol..

At the moment I've cut out and down.. So I measure most things basically If me and my other half go out for a meal ill have a kids meal instead of an adults meal (depending on where we go) one of my nurses said to eat what I want just inject to it which I do think is bad advice as your just pumping more insulin into your body not dealing with the matter at hand.. So anyway I at the moment think of my portion size and try to add up the carbs by looking at the amount there is on the charts on thee wrappers or boxes :) also I bake cakes without sugar I use Splenda sweetener and low fat butter so it works out less fat and sugar and carbs but that is a treat :) the other half eats the same diet as me and he has a gluten intolerance so we have gluten free everything which has helped with my diet too and I've found works well with my diabetes :) I'm looking into baking my own "gluten free diabetic bread" I do like to make my own foods as I can control what goes into them I've also found this to help my control too but it's just a step at a time :)

Sorry for the long reply :/

Don't apologise!!!! It is nice talking about it with someone who has it!!!
Yeah I am thinking about cutting down on carbs but I don't know if I could do it!! Pasta, Bread, Rice and Potatos are my favourite!! I have switched to sweet potato which is better.. You will have to give me some of your receipes I love cooking and baking!! :)

I do need to be more strict with myself!!

Awwh bless ya :) it is nice thank you for talking with me :) I cut out pasta I only have that as a treat now the same with rice too.. If I have potatoes it's only a small baked potato or 5 small baby potatoes or if its chips we have the lighter choices frozen ones or I make my own and bake them in the oven I've never used a fryer :) but if we do have chips it's only a handful.. If its mash its two tablespoons of it :) I fancy something I will have it but I will only have a little bit... If you cut it out completely you want it.. It's like telling a child my to touch something and they do it anyway.. I found myself saying oh I shouldn't have that oh but this once won't hurt and it became more often that I'd eat the things I shouldn't lol.. Like chocolate type 1s can eat dark chocolate but I really can not stand it so I treat myself to one or two squares of a dairy milk bar and the other half eats the rest so I'm not tempted to eat the lot :) works for me :) plus I'm then not craving a bar of chocolate and then I'm not indulging in one either which then puts my levels up then I get poorly so all in all its finding what works for you and your diabetes some people my think I'm crazy for doing what I do but everyone is different and the key thing is to remember that we are all different we may have the same illness but everyone who has type 1 can have certain things with out spiking their blood sugars and others can't have that it's trail and error and finding the happy medium :)

I could prob cut out rice and I haven't had pasta in a while anyway, but when you put it that way it doesn't sound that bad!! :) I think I may give it a go! My other half is really good when it comes to eating what I eat and he doesn't have sugary drinks as much as he used to... He knows Mountain Dew used to be my favourite so he trys not to bring any home to tempt me! lol..

I must admit sometimes I have days where I really don't care and just binge :( Not good. lol.

I'm the same with regard to portions, il have a little bit rather than nothing at all as it stops any cravings that come about from denying urself something! I'm not on insulin yet so have no choice but to change my diet but I go with a low GI diet rather than cutting carbs out altogether. If ur not overweight then I find low carb/GI carb and high fat work really well, I try to have fat with any meal that has carbs in it as it slows the glucose absorption right down to a level my deficient insulin cells can cope with lol it also stops spikes from happening after eating carb. For example... If I have small portion of pasta bolognaise (mince which has fat, cooked in oil/ butter which is fat) I can usually get a reading of 5-6.5mmol afterwards but if I have tuna pasta (same size portion) I'm over 10mmol!!! So I don't eat that anymore needless to say lol but it just goes to show the effect fat can have on carb breakdown!

Hi Krissy and welcome

Just picking up on something said earlier about the dafne/Desmond/sadie course (or what ever its called in your area). I would recommend in doing it as they will teach you to adjust your insulin to the amount of carbs you have on your plate.
Completed mine in Feb this year and the last 7 months I've had the best control i've had over the last 23+yrs.

Hello All:
My Names Sarah, I have recently diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes after a misdiagnosis of type 2. I was originally diagnosed by drs as a type 2 Diabetic. Subsequently they started me on oral medication and diet modifications to help reduce the sugar levels but as the time went by i was feeling more and more unwell. I kept returning to the drs and explaining that the medication wasn't working and that i was feeling extremely unwell. My oral medication was increased to the point i was on the max dose. But it was still not working and i was feeling really sick by this stage. I went back and saw a different dr who ordered some more blood tests. Well lets say that's when my life and world where tipped upside down. I was advised that i had extremely high sugar levels (27.2 in fact). And i had presence of Ketones. With me being so unwell the Dr Sent me straight to Hospital where i was promptly admitted and told that i had been misdiagnosed and that i had been type 1 diabetic from the very beginning and it was now in a bad way as i had not been treated properly. I was in hospital for nearly a week as they started me on insulin injections and educated me on what it was and how i can live with T1D. I have since been working on getting my sugar levels under control. But ever since i was in hospital i have had this extreme feeling of nausea and it has caused me to have further concerns that there were other issues at play not just the recent development of the diabetes. So the Dr ordered me to undertake some more tests. And Today got the results and if Living with T1D isnt hard enough i have also been diagnosed as a Celiac as well. I was just starting to get my head around living with the Diabetes and then i get Celiacs thrown in as well. I am feeling a bit deflated and overwhelmed by how my health has taken such a dramatic decline. I was wondering if anyone else out there may be in the same situation that i now find myself in? And if so if you may be able to offer some advice and or direction in how you cope and work with this double wammy. I look forward to hearing from and meeting lots of new people thru this and look forward to maybe even making a friend or too along the way. :D

Thanks Richard, I will deff look into it :) I think I went on it when I was first diagnosed but I was still in shock and didn't reallyt take anything in! lol.

Hi Sarah! Very sorry to hear of your troubles! Doesn't sound nice at all. How long were you "Type 2" before they realised it was Type 1?? I know it is easier said than done but try to stay positive! You now know what is wrong and can work on getting your health back under control! :)
I'm sure we all have days where it is just too much and we get down about it.. I know I do!! lol. I have only just joined this forum too but so far people seem nice and supportive so take a look around and start making friends who know what you are going through :)

I cannot give you any advice on the Celiacs but I'm sure there must be some people on here who have that as well as diabetes...

Stay strong! :)

Thanks Krissy,
It is very reassuring to know you are not alone as it can often seem that people think they know and understand but it's often not until your living it that you truly understand. I was diagnosed type 2 for around 12 months. So it was a rather long and frustrating period. I am now pleased that I know what's going on with my body finally and understand why I have been so sick. I do still often get upset and angry about it all but am doing my best to keep positive. How long have you been a T1D for? I am now currently getting professional help with the celiacs but if you happen to know of anybody like myself please advise. Look forward to learning and get to know people. :)
