Hi Jackie
It's really nice to have found this forum. My 5 year old daughter was diagnosed and I felt like the whole world tipped on its head.
Already though we're getting used to a new 'normal' and it's made me realise more than ever how amazing my little girl truly is.
So, hi!
:)

Sorry, meant to say diagnosed 2 weeks ago. And that it's nice to know that there's someone out there who's been through it all and knows how it all feels.

Hi both,

Our little girl (8) was diagnosed in December of last year. Like you Laura, we are getting to grips with this whole new routine. It's been upsetting, but we're just really grateful she'd still with us to be honest (she was critically ill with DKA). We can deal with all the hypos/fingerpricks/diet etc, we just want her to be happy and healthy. This site is great isn't it? I have felt so much better being able to read about other people's experiences. I so wish my little girl didn't have diabetes, but it's not as doom-and-gloom as I had feared. We'll be fine, we'll manage. :D

Not got children.... But through this website I have regular teleohone calls with a parent of a 9 year old. We've become good friends and we help each other as her child has an insulin pump and so do I.

You can get fantastic help as the patient or the carer on this site. I also made friends by phone with another lady through this site too and although having never met either lady, I would count them as really dear, best friends.

Obviously wishing that you hadnt had the cause to join our special club.. But welcome, you will get great friendships, advice from real parents, advce from real diabetics that have good advice and found things that work for them that hospitals don't tell you..

Hi ladies, I'm the same. My little girl, almost 7, was diagnosed in December. I don't think I've ever read so much as I have this past month!! I've swapped Facebook for this forum, search for new developments & research in my lunch break and have just had my amazon delivery of books. Feel so overwhelmed at times. Aren't our angels amazing. I'm exhausted and would love to chat to someone going through the same :) Take care, Tracy

Hi Tracy,

Yes, I think our children are amazing! My little girl hasn't complained once about the fingerpricks and injections. She just seems to accept it. She thinks it's pretty interesting, counting carbs, choosing injection sites, helping to plan meals etc. She will try and predict her blood sugar levels, we'll make a little game out of it - who's closest to guessing correctly. I think it really helps to involve her and explain things. Re. books...I got a copy of Dr. Rangar Hanas' book 'Type 1 Diabetes'. If you haven't ordered it already, I can highly recommend it. It's very detailed and I've found it extremely useful. Our DSN recommended it to me. It's a bit pricey but you may be able to pick up a second hand copy on Ebay. I also ordered a low Glycemic Index book, to help me plan her meals better. I already have the carbs and cals book (and app) which has proved very useful.
I think it's pretty normal to feel overwhelmed sometimes, it's such a shock and there are so many adjustments to make. Not to mention all the worrying. We just need to remember that while our children obviously come first, we have to look after ourselves too. Anyway, I use that excuse when I want a lazy hour in front of the telly!
Take care. If you ever need a chat I am happy for you to PM me. Not that I claim to have any answers (I am such a newbie still, though learning fast!) but it's reassuring to know we're not alone.

Hi
I am also new to this. My little girl who is just 11 was diagnosed last October. It has been a tough few months but we are beginning to get to grips. It is just a huge shock and so much to take in. I am so proud of how she has took it. I am glad I've found this forum as its good to hear your not on your own.

Although I would never wish this on anyone, I'm really glad you're all here!
Where abouts are you all?
Having just got kinda used to it all we've today moved on to the fancy pants meter! Grrrrrr

None if you are alone. This is the place to come to when you feel alone though! More experience here from people who live with it daily. I live in Cambridge, though you might have guessed that [SMILING FACE WITH SMILING EYES]

Just wondered if you were all in the UK as thins sound a bit differently managed on other countries. Has anyone been using the smart meter thingy? It's driving me mad. Not the meter, more my ability to use it! Keep thinking in going to do something wrong and overdose my poor little thing! Plus, she's a really fussy eater (which, surprisingly, has actually helped in a way) so I never know exactly how much she's going to polish off!
Still "soon enough this will be second nature..."

May be worthwhile considering bolusing after food.. Depending on how long eating a meal may take.. If you want to stop worrying about how much will be ate. Or give so much at start say 50% and give other remaing dosage at end depending how much is ate.

What meter are you using? Does it calculate the bolus for you?
Sx

It's an Accu Check Aviva Expert. Thanks for the suggestions; we've been giving insulin after the meals and the machine does calculate everything for us.
I think it's just that we're only 2 weeks in, had just got used to one way of doing things having taken so much information on board and then it all changed again. I'm okay with it all, and it has certainly improved Her sugar levels after just one day - I definitely see the sense in carb counting and corrective dosing.
The only thing is that when I go to check back the day's readings, I can only see the post-dinner one. Strange. But I'm writing pretty much everything down still so even if the machine doesn't have it stored, I do!

It should store all your data.

When doing a blood test do you mark in whether it is pre meal, post meal or other? Are you going in to my data, view data?... From there you click on the time band that shows and it should then give you details of any bg value, meal time etc. if you then use left and or right buttons you can tab through the screens without going in and out all the time.

Within a few days you'll be fine... I can pm you if you lije and we could swap contact details if you have probs with meter...

Your meter is same as mine practically, except it also communicates to my insulin pump as well... So no need to manually give injections.
Sx

Mmm. I have viewed data and it shows me all of what you mention and the dose to give but not on other time bands.
Funnily enough, the ones where I can view all of the info. are times when it was just me and my lovely lil pincushion; the other are times when the other 4 children (and probably the crazy dog) were around! The peace and quiet that the weekend will bring - she says with UTMOST confidence. Ha! - will give me a better chance of working it all out.
Would love to swap contact details via PM; it's been really nice and reassuring to speak with you so thanks.
