please can someone help im on 40mg of gliclazide twice a day for type 2 for 2 weeks now and I have gained 3.5lb no change in diet im following the weight watchers programme and was doing really well lost over half a stone since sept slow and steady me so im confused why I have gained this weight could it be the tablets or something else im not excessively heavy but need to get this weight off to get sugars under control but it seems all my hard work is for nothing if this carries on xx

The Glic will be increasing your insulin supply so you may get the same weight gain probs that injecting insulin can give. may i suggest you ease of the carbs in your diet which should reduce your insulin requirement hence reducing your need for Glic.

Falling into the trap of thinking tablets taken will deal with extra carbohydrate consumption does not help.
You must cut down.

breakfast

Weetabix or porridge with skimmed milk and a banana with coffee with skimmed milk and 2 sweeteners

lunch

sandwich using multigrain bread salad and meat with strawberries grapes and pineapple with yogurt

dinner

whatever meat we have in with potatoes boiled or dry roasted only have 3 halves with a load of veg carrots peas sweet corn broccoli cauliflower green beans etc.

That is a lot of carbs.

Weetabix and porridge can give you a large spike in your BG levels. Try berries with full fat greek yoghurt or bacon with scrambled eggs instead. Bananas, grapes and pineapples also high in carbs. Watch out for fruit yoghurts, get used to reading carb content on the container.

For dinner try to avoid potatoes and carrots and replace with other green veg.
