Hidden sweet stuff

My 22 year old stepson was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 2 years ago. He's on oral medication and doing ok on it. He's a student and I imagine his diet is pretty bad whilst at uni but he eats relatively well whilst home for holidays. Still too many carbs, but healthier carbs than his usual diet. I've recently found choc muffins and biscuits under his bed. He claims he needs them if his sugar levels dip. He's no longer a kid. Advice would be helpful. Thank you

Hi. I suspect he knows that he doesn't need anything if his sugar dips because he's probably not on medication that would cause hypos. He just likes sugar as most of us do! How about suggesting some alternatives such as nuts, certain fruits etc as snacks. I'm sure it's not easy as his colleagues will no doubt be snacking on sugar-laden foods, but hopefully a sensible discussion with him will help. I hope he doesn't really believe he needs them. Ask him how he knows his sugar levels have dipped and where to.

Depends on his medication but it is not normal for type 2's to get BG levels which are dangerously low. Hiding them under his bed is a real giveaway. How to handle it though? A very difficult question. All you can do is encourage without nagging, a difficult line to follow. It's not disimilar from someone who drinks or gambles. It's their life, their risk, but it's your nerves that suffer. I think all you can do is show him that you won't be fobbed off with lame excuses but let him know that your support and encouragement is their should he seek it.

Thank you both. It's hard as he's an adult and only lives with us over the summer. We've addressed the hiding and suggested he keeps sweet stuff in the kitchen as it is his choice at the end of the day. I'll suggest nuts etc and continue to 'role model' healthy eating. Really appreciate your thoughts and empathy.
