hi there I saw my dsn last week and she said my ha1c was 6.9. I was a little confused as to how that could be because i do a fasting blood test every morning and my readings are always high e,g 11.1 , 10.4 and so on. I have been doing fasting blood tests for months now and always high readings, dont understand whats going on with my bs readings and my dsn could not give me an answer to it either. Can anyone here give me any advice as to what it might be . I also do random bs readings two hours after ive eaten and they are high too, i am very bemused with it all. am on low carb diet, take 500mg metformin three times daily, 40 mg gliclizide daily and 8o mg atorvostatin daily. I also have high cholestrol and high blood pressure too. any advice would be good thanks x

Have you had your iron levels checked? If you have low iron levels then you will have a lower than expected A1c from what I can gather.

Re: high bg readings but low ha1c reading

A HbA1c of 6.9% is indicative of an average BG reading of about 8.4 mmol/l.

It might be that your fasting readings are higher than they are later in the day.

How low is low-carb? It sounds to me like you might need a little extra help from your GP.

Re: high bg readings but low ha1c reading

Remember the HbA1c is in different units to the BGs you measure on your meter. An HbA1c of 6.9 equates to an overall average BG about 9. Also, your meter readings don't give you a true average - you may have high fasting BGs but near-hypos in the night for example. Wouldn't take many night lows to get your average down to 9. Finally, meters we use are not that accurate!

Sorry Borofergie, must have posted same time as you! Roughly the same message though luckily!

They can look for blood conditions that have you turning over your red blood cells faster than normal.

I would also suggest a test at 4am in the morning.. you might find that it is actually a good few points lower than your morning reading.. as your body prepares for the day your liver releases extra glucose this can cause your morning BG's to rise.. also known as the Dawn Phenomenon..
