It's been a while since I posted. I've spent the last week terrified. I've had plenty of high's (9/10/11s) over the past few months mainly an hour after eating followed by bigs dips. I imagined baby would he huge but growth scan reveals he is just under 50th percentile and my hba1c was 43 so it appears numerous short lived highs haven't had too much of an affect. Has this happened to anyone else? My first baby was 6llb10 at 39nweeks. Of course I am now terrified this baby will pile on the pounds. I just want to try to avoid a c section as the thought of one scares me immensely. Consultant and obs don't seem worried at all its just me. But we've been told so often about the 1 Hourn after meal glucose being 7 or under. Mine never is. I've started having insulin 20mins prior to meals now. Any other advice?

Hi, wow I can't believe your first baby was 6lb10 that's a great weight for 39w, I'm currently 34w and baby was around 4lb9 at my 32w scan I'm bricking it about possibly needing a section but will see what they say after my scan on 23rd, I guess if you need one you need one it's what they decide is best for you and baby. Oh and my bgs have rarely been out of range after meals but I think we are all different and with or without the diabetes baby will grow at different rates xx

Hi @Loulou52 i think everyone has had a few highs in pregnancy. Are you pumping? I ended up giving myself more insulin checking half hour after meal then giving myself a bit more insulin or carbohydrates depending on what I was. 43 is pretty good though. Have you tried low GI diet to try prevent spikes? It's hard work pregnancy but defo worth it xx

Hi Loulou52 are you type 1 or 2? I was advised to test 2 hrs after eating as have type 1 but target was 6.4 i know diff teams advise slightly different but sounds like your doing really well! x

Type 1 and on pump. I do lots of correctiona though. I will carry on with taking the dose 20-30mins before eating. Thanks for the advice!

Hi, for some higher-GI meals, I've found it helpful to give more than I need for the carbs pre-meal, then reduce basal for a period of time afterwards to stop the hypo. I read somewhere that it's called a super-bolus or something?? It is trial & error, though.

I can happily report that this approach also works well outside of pregnancy when it comes to mince pies!! x

When I was pregnant I was never able to get my bloodsugars to be below 7 one hour post-eating. We tried a few different things, but even with giving my breakfast bolus almost an hour before eating, it still took 2 hours post-eating. My doctor knew and wasn't concerned because we tried a few different methods and it was usually back in range by about 2 hours.

I completely expected to have a large baby, but I was surprised when I saw the stats that most diabetic babies aren't really that big. My little guy was 7lbs 4oz born at 38+6. (I did have a c-section but it was because baby was breach). If your first was so small, I'd be surprised it your 2nd ended up being much different.
