Just wondering what to do. Six months ago I went for my three months blood test and it was 9. I asked if I could try and bring it down with diet and the diabetic nurse said if I could bring it below 7. I could avoid medication. Well this time it came back at 8.3 and I have received a note saying they want to see me. I know they are going to give me medication but as it has gone down I would like to carry on with diet and trying to lose weight. I also have a morning spike of between 10 and 11.3.
Can anyone tell me if these numbers are going cause problems if I carry on with diet alone, I really dont want to take metaformin or drugs like that, as I have heard about bad side effects. I dont feel ill or anything and I dont want to feel ill with medication. Are anyone elses blood sugar this high who is not taking medication.

I think your bg is too high and might cause problems in the long run but there may be room for improvement through diet. Question is, what do you eat?

thank you for your reply. My diet is not as it should be, when diagnosed 6 years ago I had very good control for around 4 years, I then had a very traumatic episode and cant seem to get back on track. I seem to do quite well all day, then in the evening just nibble at things. I think this is why my blood sugars are high in the mornings. I think the thing is as well that there is so much information on what not to eat and not enough of what you can. I supppose I will sort it eventually.

You may benefit from a higher fat intake, as this seems to help with satiety and stop us from nibbling. And fat rarely does much when it comes to raise bg so it is safe.

You are familiar with the Dietdoctor, aren't you? If Not, http://www.dietdoctor.com/ here is a link. Have a poke around his site, it is good.

If low carbing, high fat helps a lot.

I think the question that you need to ask yourself is 'what is worse the possible side effects of medication or the very real chance of diabetic complications in the distant future. ?
I am in Noway attempting to frighten you into any course of action only to consider all the implications of a particular course of action. I hope that whatever course you take you will be comfortable with it.

Thank you for your advice, the link you gave is very good, and I will be having a good look later at this.

Thank you for your comments, I go today to see the nurse, so I will discuss it with her. You are right of course I should be sensible about this, I am struggling at the moment and in denial mode but will pull myself together and get on with it lol

First thing is to get your BG within safe range. It's good you're seeing your nurse
You have tried diet and the forum will help you tweek it to get the most benefit ... dietdoctor site you were given is a good start

Thank you for your comments, have had a look at the diet doctor site and I think it will help.

Thank you all for your comments and advice. I have seen the diabetic nurse today and she says I can carry on with the diet only as all other signs are fine. I have three months to get it into the 7 / 7.5 range so I have already started to cut down and am going to have a good look at the diet doctor link.I have around 3 stone to lose so here goes.

Thanks Brunneria, I have just had a look on that page. Its really good and as I am cutting carbs, found it very helpful. It gives good ideas as to what to have at meal times. I also have high dawn readings so will also have a look at the link Bloodsugar 101.

A T1 has that range because of fear of hypo.
A lot of T2 here has A1c of 5 to 6.5 as a target, after 6 your complication risk jumps.

If I had your morning numbers I would be on metformin for insulin resistance and liver dump. My numbers were fasting 8.5 and a1c of 7.5 and I went on 1500 met and lchf and am now a1c 5.6 and fasting under 6

I did ask the nurse if my readings would cause any problems over the next 3 months, and she said it takes a long time for these high readings to cause damage. My readings have slowly risen over the last couple of years and thats because I have not been eating properly, hopefully I can bring it down again as I did in the first place, if not then I will have to have medication.Thank you for your comments, I appreciate all advice from the people on this site.
